  • REAL LIFE GANGSTERS: Pablo Escobar and Al Capone - 2 Books in 1

    Roger Harrington

Paperback (Independently published, Sept. 10, 2018)
REAL LIFE GANGSTERS: Pablo Escobar and Al Capone - 2 Books in 1 Featuring… *Pablo Escobar *Al Capone 2 Great Books in 1! Pablo Escobar The city of Medellin is the second-largest in the South American nation of Columbia. It is nestled in the Aburra Valley in the Andes ranges. On December 2 1992 citizens of the district of Los Olivos heard gunshots from the rooftops. They saw two men running across the orange – tiled roofs, pursued by a group of armed and uniformed men. A short gunfight ensued. Soon eight armed men, officers of the National Columbian Police, posed for photographs, brandishing weapons and smiling over the bloody corpse of a 44 year old man. That man was Pablo Emilia Escobar Gaviria, known in the annals of infamy simply as Pablo Escobar. He had been the most powerful drug lord in Colombia and one of the most notorious in the world. He was so pernicious that for a time he was number one on the hit list of the United States. He controlled the cocaine trade in the United States. He used wealth and terror to dominate Columbian politics and destroy his enemies. He openly flaunted his fantastic wealth, believing that he was untouchable. But there he was, a bare-footed, bloody corpse, his executioners shouting ‘Viva Columbia! Viva Columbia!’ Al Capone Despite Capone’s violent career and the brutality of his past, there is an on-going fascination with his life. Many fictitious characters have been modelled on him and the term ‘mobster’ or ‘gangster’ invariably conjures up an image of Al Capone. There have been plenty of books and articles covering his life and some of these have been made into films. In real life, Capone’s influence was enough to change the law in order to deal with him. The 1927 Supreme Court ruling that income tax was due on criminal earnings was intended to help the authorities trap criminals and was instrumental in Capone’s eventual downfall. This is the true story of the life and criminal career of Al Capone, the original American gangster, and one of the most feared criminals ever to have lived.

  • Revenge of the Red Club

    Kim Harrington

    Paperback (Aladdin, Oct. 20, 2020)
“Will educate and inspire budding feminists…A real and necessary read, period!” —Kirkus Reviews “Empowering.” —Booklist “A middle school feminist manifesto that fans of girl-led ensembles like Ann M. Martin’s The Babysitter’s Club and Ann Brashares’s The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants will love.” —School Library Journal (starred review) A tween reporter discovers an important and beloved club at school is being shut down—and uses the power of the pen to try and activate some much-needed social change in this period-positive and empowering middle grade novel about the importance of standing up for what you believe in.Riley Dunne loves being a member of the Red Club. It’s more than a group of girls supporting each other through Aunt Flo’s ups and downs; it’s a Hawking Middle School tradition. The club’s secret locker has an emergency stash of supplies, and the girls are always willing to lend an ear, a shoulder, or an old pair of sweatpants. But when the school administration shuts the Red Club down because of complaints, the girls are stunned. Who would do that to them? The girls’ shock quickly turns into anger, and then they decide to get even. But wallpapering the gym with maxi pads and making tampon crafts in art class won’t bring their club back. Only Riley can do that. Using the skills she has cultivated as her school paper’s top investigative reporter (okay, only investigative reporter), she digs for the truth about who shut the club down and why. All the while dealing with friendship drama, a new and ridiculous dress code, and a support group that is now more focused on fighting with each other than fighting back. Can she save the Red Club before this rebellion turns into a full-scale war?
