    Stephens (1867-1906) was an American novelist and playwright who worked as drama critic for the Philadelphia Press for several years. These stories, written during his time at the newspaper in the early 1890s, represent his early creative work before he turned to the historical fiction for which he is best known. The collection was published posthumously in book form in 1908.
