Taylor, depressed over the loss of his dad, wishes he could live in a book and be a hero instead of being the loser he has become. His neighbor, Tammy, feels bad for having lost her kitten. Malea, an aging, evil witch from another world, hears their sad thoughts and decide they'd make good trophies for her collection. She considers Jake Kincade, a writer with writer's block, as a trophy but decides to take the pre-teens instead. Unfortunately, her thoughts get merged with Kincade's and he thinks Taylor and Tammy are characters for a new book. To stop him from objecting, she transports Kincade to the Graveyard where all lost dreams end and like Taylor and Tammy, shrunk by Malea.That leaves Taylor, the hero in Kincade’s book. He must save Tammy before her harvest day ends or the book won't be finished and the characters disappear; and, Kincade fears, along with the writer. Certis and Nullis, two gremlins, escaped one of Malea's trophy hunts but ended up small. They become characters in the story helping Taylor rescue Tammy.Kincade watches the story from the Graveyard on an obsolete, closed circuit television thanks to the Caretaker and his wife, who look after the place. Taylor, Tammy and the two gremlins eventually end up in the Graveyard but it's still Taylor's job as the story's hero to defeat Malea and get them home, fully restored. He comes up with plan but will it work?

Ron and Jessica use a computer to plot the merger point to be in a meditation chamber at a local missionary. They feel secure that the merger cannot take place until they realize that the storms might be solar storms which have been predicted. And, they find themselves being offered as sacrifices to the merger.
