Fleeing the destruction of their warren, the rabbits encounter danger on the journey to their new home.

Holly arrives at Watership Down with terrifying tales of the destruction of their old home. He also has news of a fine big warren where there is plenty of food, so a small band of rabbits go and investigate. Cowslip's warren appears perfect and Bigwig is keen to stay, but Fiver has a bad feeling.

The new warren needs more rabbits, so Kehaar goes off on an aerial recce, reporting back with the location of Efrafa, a warren overflowing with rabbits. A few go to investigate the warren to see if any of the rabbits would like to join them, but they are taken prisoner and brought before Woundwort.

During a raid for food at Nuthanger Farm, the rabbits meet Kehaar the seagull and a mouse.
