Although Stevenson is perhaps most famous for "Treasure Island", "Kidnapped", and "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", "The New Arabian Nights" was his first published collection of fiction. First published in 1916, It is an English-translation of the "One Thousand and One Nights", an anthology of South Asian and Middle Eastern folk tales compiled during the Islamic Golden Age. It was put together over hundreds of years by a variety of scholars, authors, and translators across Asia and North Africa, with the stories having roots in medieval Persian, Arabic, Mesopotamian, Jewish, Indian, and Egyptian folklore.
