Pedro, the Moores' groundskeeper, especially fears the masks, having once seen a friend of his die shortly after touching one of the masks. He warns Hannah about the masks' evil power, but she cannot really imagine that they pose much of a danger. Instead, Hannah focuses all her attention on enjoying her new life at the hacienda, playing with her best friend, Juanito (Pedro's son), riding her beloved pony, Paco, usually in the company of her pet dog, Lurko, and regularly eating without her father's knowledge and approval her favorite snack, tortillas con frijoles, prepared by Maria, the Moores' cook. One day a big thunderstorm strikes. Hannah spots in the distance the riverbank Juanito is standing on suddenly collapse. Her friend, falling into the floodwaters raging down the barranca, screams out for help. Hannah instantly jumps on Paco, and the two, along with Lurko, race to the barranca to try to rescue Juanito. Thanks to the Masks of Death, the rescue does not go quite as planned! However, Hannah acts most courageously, and the next day the grateful townspeople hold a marvelous fiesta in her honor, presenting her many precious gifts in appreciation for her heroism. Meanwhile, Mr. Moore (Hannah's father) and Pedro learn, though, that the rescue has definitely not been a total success. They keep the tragic discovery made by Pedro a secret in order to not upset Hannah. But, as a terrified Hannah soon learns, the Masks of Death have something else in mind, and are determined to make her happy life at the hacienda an endless nightmare!
