Dreaming of CassieFitz has seen a lot of Cassie, though he’s certain she has no idea he even exists. It doesn’t keep him from impossible hopes, though. Of course, even if she likes him back, it would never work out. Life’s hard for a teen, and especially when he has to constantly stay on top of his blood pressure just to keep from changing into a monster. How can he manage that when the very sight of her gets his blood pumping big time? Speaking of blood pumping, why does the new guy in town, Archer Chase, seem to be watching him at every turn? Could he know the secret that Fitz holds so close to the vest that only his best friend has any inkling what happens when the animal breaks free?DREAMING OF CASSIE is episode one in the new young adult paranormal romance series, FITZ AND THE PACK. Fitz Crawford, a typical teen, struggles to keep some sense of normalcy in his life as he goes to school, hangs out with his best friend, deals with normal teen crushes, and tries desperately to keep from turning into a mad, ravenous killing machine every time his heartbeat gets faster than a crawl. Here is a preview:So, after a dinner of gray hot dogs and stale buns, greasy chips and flat grocery store root beer, he and his best friend Snort had headed out from the Whispering Pines Trailer Court (where nobody ever whispered and there wasn’t a pine for 20 miles) to the Better Latté Than Never bookstore-slash-café on Snyder Street. Fitz looked out from his hoodie, over the bookshelf in front of him and outside the plate glass window facing the street. Puffs of smoke wafted from Snort’s wide, greasy nostrils and oozed from between his thin, gray lips. He turned, just in time to see Snort looking back, offering a halfhearted wave and tapping on his cheap digital watch in a “hurry it up” motion.Fitz rolled his eyes and looked at the clock over the deserted café. It was nearly nine, almost time for Snort’s favorite show: Mud Wrestling With the Stars. He ignored Snort and turned back to the Clearance rack. He had twelve bucks in his pocket, and was hoping to have enough left over to buy Snort his snack food of choice for mud wrestling watching: spicy turkey jerky and parmesan cheese curls. So, that meant it was either 1,001 Love Poems for the 18th Century (on sale for $3.99) or Short Stories from the Golden Age of Classic Literature (for $5.99). He sighed. Both sounded like snooze fests, which is just what Fitz had in mind. Whenever he felt his blood pressure rising, whenever the curse threatened to overtake his cells and turn him from man into beast, just looking at the frilly roses on the book covers could sometimes stop him from going full fur. He grabbed the book of poetry and walked slowly toward the cash register.

It continues the story that began in DREAMING OF CASSIE and CASSIE CORNERED. Here is a preview:He leaned back against the white gazebo post, staring at Cassie’s front door. Hers was a simple house, two stories, cracker box style, but well-kept and classy. There was already a pumpkin on the porch steps, but it wasn’t lit and upstairs, in Cassie’s bedroom, little orange lights blinked around her windows. He watched her shadow flit back and forth, pacing, the other lights in the house dark. Were her parents already asleep? There was no car in the drive, so… maybe her Dad was a traveling salesman or something. Or maybe her Mom was. The rain came down, his legs cooled off and Fitz must have dozed off for a moment or two because suddenly there was Snort, snack cake wrappers crackling and the ice in a 64-ounce cup of soda sloshing around.“This should get you back up to speed,” he said, handing over a bag full of junk food and the giant soda. Fitz immediately sucked on the straw, draining a quarter of the sweet soda before gasping for breath. “Thanks, Snort, I owe you.” He returned to the soda, the sugar filling his cells and bringing him back to life. “You keep saying that,” Snort joked, snatching a single candy bar for himself, “but I don’t see any payoff yet.”Fitz choked down a laugh, putting down the soda and grabbing a chocolate frosted cupcake and downing it in two bites. There were three more in the bag and he ate them all, one after the other, chasing them down with soda, sweet soda, until the cup was dry and he slumped back against the gazebo railing, eyelids fluttering with the sweet sugar rush.“You think I put back all the calories I burned?” Fitz asked, voice no longer so hoarse and husky.“And then some,” Snort snorted around the last bite of his candy bar.

Here is a preview:Cassie shook her head. “That wasn’t my stomach growling, Lissa. I think… I think someone’s following us.”Lissa opened her mouth to dispute Cassie, which was her default setting, but then thought better of it. Just as she was about to reply with some smart retort, there was a slight growl in the alley behind them. Both girls turned, one by one, as if some B-movie director had staged it just that way. In the dim light that filled the alley between Harbinger’s Haberdashery and the Frosting Factory, a shape hovered near a dripping water pipe.Lissa took her usual “I’ll handle this stance,” legs slightly spread, hands on her narrow waist, high collar scratching against her chin as she barked, “Who’s there?”Cassie found herself clutching the sides of the garish orange and green Cinedome bucket as she squinted, peering into the dimly lit alley. The shape stood, stock still, but then something shifted to the right as a second shape stepped into the dim light, joining the first.Lissa either didn’t notice or it didn’t startle her as much as it did Cassie. “We’ve got mace, you know, and 911 on speed dial, so…”Suddenly, footsteps, splashing in the fresh rain puddles, moving quickly as the shapes wheeled toward them.

Here is a preview:The big problem now, though, was that she was in danger. It was one thing to have to worry about himself changing into a monster, but at least if he ran into trouble, he’d be the one walking away from it unhurt. Cassie wasn’t a werewolf. She couldn’t protect herself, and that meant he had to protect her.Of course, his best friend Snort wasn’t any help at all. He was way too busy making sure to crack wise about them. When snort wasn’t busy chowing down on every single piece of snack food in sight, he was right on top of things. In other words, he was ready to make every single possible crude remark about Fitz, Cassie, Fitz and Cassie together, and just about any other embarrassing thing he could come up with. No amount of letting Snort know he risked becoming wolf lunch did any good.Things didn’t make sense. There were wolves in town, and he’d had some frustrating and frightening run ins with them, just barely keeping Cassie from finding out what was happening. Why in the heck were they here? What was he going to heave to do to deal with them? There was certainly no way he could just let things go on the way they were.A knock at the door took his thoughts another direction.

He shook his head as he set his backpack on the bed. He unzipped his backpack and pulled out a small bottle and started to laugh. He knew that he saved the poison for some reason. He dug around and pulled out an eye dropper. He filled it up and walked back into the living room where his aunt was watching her shows. She looked up at him and asked that if he was hungry and he said yes very. She got up from her lazy boy and waddled over to the kitchen. She reached inside her freezer and took out three frozen hamburger patties, then grabbed a cast iron frying pan. While she was busy in the kitchen, he dropped five drops of the poison into her diet Coke. He smiled even bigger as he walked into the kitchen. “Do you need any help in here Aunt Vickie? I am sure you must be tired from driving and I know you want to watch your shows. Let me do this for you.”“Oh you are such a doll baby. Okay make sure you use the Crisco to fry them in, the grease adds that extra flavor. And keep them in there until they are black. I like them well done, burgers are the best when they are charred, oh and don’t forget to slap on some ketchup and mayonnaise as well. That is the only way we eat them under this roof “Aunt Vickie said as she started to drink her diet Coke.

He looked at his feet and she saw tears rolling off the tip of his nose, falling to the ground. She bit her bottom lip and felt like a complete idiot. After all, being a werewolf was hard enough, but telling someone that you are one could not be easy. She walked up to him, and hugged him as tight as she could.
