MacDonald (1873–1932) emigrated to Canada in 1887 with his English mother and Canadian father. After studies at the Hamilton Art School and the Central Ontario School of Art and Design, he joined Lawren S. Harris and several other Canadian artists in what became known as the Group of Seven. These like-minded artists agreed that Canada's rugged wilderness needed to be recorded in a distinctive painting style, departing from European tradition. The Tangled Garden—with its vibrant hues and patterned accents—captures a brief yet arresting moment in the wilding of a common backyard garden.1000 piecesFrom PomegranateCompleted puzzle measures 25" x 20"Artist: J.E.H. • Charley Harper Sketchbook: How to Draw 28 Birds in Harper's Style

    Pomegranate Communications Inc., Charley Harper

    Spiral-bound (Pomegranate, May 1, 2013)
This step-by-step visual guide to drawing twenty-eight birds as portrayed by artist Charley Harper progresses from simple to complex images, from cardinals through owls to a roadrunner. An avid naturalist, Charley Harper particularly liked to paint birds. He masterfully portrayed a host of species using simple lines and shapes. From the smallest songbird to the largest seabird, Harper conveyed not only the form and coloration of his avian subjects but also their personalities. His minimalist approach did not reduce the impact of his art; instead, it offered a bold and unique interpretation of nature s winged beauties. This sketchbook gives you the opportunity to learn how Harper captured his subjects with the fewest possible visual elements. For each of the twenty-eight birds featured herein, we ve included a four-page presentation. On the first page, you will find line drawings that show a three-stage process for recreating Harper s image. The line drawings build on each other: the first one presents the most basic shapes, the second further develops the form of the bird, and the third com-pletes the image with all the details. Following the line drawings are two uncoated sheets on which you can mimic these lines and shapes. Harper s original full-color bird image completes each sequence. The sketchbook progresses from the simpler of Harper s bird images to the more complex. In some cases, the line drawings present a slightly modified version of the original art. At the end of this book, you will find thirty pages for your continued sketching, be it using Harper s style or your own bold and unique approach. Happy bird sketching!
  • Gustave Baumann: New Mexico Museum of Art

    Paperback (Pomegranate, Jan. 1, 2013)
Soft cover book with staple binding. 48 pages with 22 images to color. Size: 8½ x 11 in. Coloring pages are blank on the back so they can be cut out and displayed.Artist Gustave Baumann (American, b. Germany, 1881 1971) immigrated with his family to the United States from Germany when he was ten years old. At the age of sixteen he began full-time work in a commercial engraving house and took night classes in drawing at the Art Institute of Chicago to, in his words, get a little closer to art. Baumann began work at an advertising studio and by 1903 had opened his own studio. As soon as he had saved one thousand dollars from the new business, Baumann gave one half of the earnings to his mother and used the other half to travel to Munich to enroll in the School of Arts and Crafts located there. At the time, Munich printmakers were producing bold, innovative designs, which so deeply impressed Baumann that they influenced his work throughout his life. In rural Indiana, New York, New England, and the Southwest (where he lived for fifty years), he produced work that portrayed the spirit of his surroundings with respect and deep affection. You ll find 22 of Gustave Baumann s artworks in this coloring book. They are shown as small pictures on the inside front and back covers. When you color the line drawings, you could choose to copy the originals, or you might prefer to create your own color combinations. We ve left the last page of this coloring book blank so that you can draw and color a picture of your own. Will it be a landscape, a still life, or something wholly from your imagination?
