13 year old Max Brant lives in North London, he leads what he thinks is a boring average life without any really close friends. When his grandfather dies, much to the outrage of some of his relatives, he leaves his large house on a Scottish island together with a small fortune to Max. On the night of his grandfather’s funeral, much to his amazement his grandfather from the past contacts Max. Max is told of a race of aliens who try to keep the balance of the Cosmos, peace between other people and help defend peaceful races from aggression. Max is asked to take his grandfather place and join the work of these peacekeepers and train to be one of their Envoys.Max and his older brother move to the house without their parents where Max is able to re-establish his friendship with Jamie Boyd a local boy of his own age he had meet on his last visit to the island, and he makes some new friends, twins David and Beth.After some doubts Max agrees to work with the aliens, they give him the power to transform his appearance to anyone he chooses, training to control this power proves no easy task and he needs help from a surprise companion. The aliens then send him with another Envoy on a simple reporting excursion for which Max has to take the appearance of an adult, a role that takes some getting use to. The excursion develops into a full mission to stop a warring race of aliens defeating a peaceful race. Using his new ability to change his appearance Max has to play several important roles in saving these peaceful people and take the lead in the final stage of their defence.Travelling via space gateways, and having to rescue some unexpected people along the way, Max visits the spacecraft of both sides. Nothing turns out as simple as it should, and he soon learns that even those in command are not always to be trusted. Finally the failed attempt by an obsessed researcher to travel through time, which is also followed in the book, provides the means to prevent the attack being successful.
