But also following Ruan is Porfani, the Kagarin assassin who manipulates events to suit his own foul plans. He wants to release the Riders within Ruan, but when Ruan evades him and Kay faces him in ritual combat, Porfani’s plans are threatened. So he devises an even more dangerous plan, one that Ruan stumbles into.

A time of War and Death The world is at war. Even behind walls of stone, armies are being obliterated. Ships pound shore batteries relentlessly, and the Horse of War has been joined by the Horse of Death, so even the dead have no rest. The armies of the dead are roaming over the land, destroying those who stand against them, swelling in numbers as they gain more flesh. Against them stand Ruan and the armies of Fron, supported by three of the Elemental Guard, who have joined forces, but what their aim is no one is sure. With the escort of Shurndarn, the Elemental Guards Kay and Sinsa, Ruan reaches the Isle of Moons, but has he found the help he needs? Even his only true ally, Brenata, appears to be wavering in her resolve to help him. Porfarni still pursues him with the help of the High Tcah, Masters of the undead souls. But there is always hope.

But even her plans are thrown into disarray when Ruan realizes his body now holds the Riders of the Apoclayse and if they escape from his blood and gain their mounts on the Horses of the Apocalypse, Cronnius will have won. Ungainly and lonely, Brenata can only be one thing—a hindrance. Ruan flees to the Island of the Moons, to beg the Proficient to help him rid himself of the Riders. Brenata and her Guard Kay follow. Yet as Ruan flees to Sham Palace to sever the bond of the Riders, other forces gather, each with a desire to take advantage of the young soldier and his burden.
