Excerpt from Thesaurus of English Words: So Classified and Arranged as to Facilitate the Expression of Ideas and Assist in Literary CompositionThe Thesaurus of Roget is justly held in high estimation both in England and in America. Though it is the first work of its kind that has appeared in the history of our language, the completeness of its plan, and its fulness of details, are such as to leave little to be supplied by others. The book may, in fact, be advantageously taken up by the student of English compo sition as an ample vocabulary furnished for his special use. The body of our noble language is, in this invaluable manual, anatomized, as it were, and distributed, not under any merely philological arrangement, connected with the mechanism and structure of language, but classified by the wants of the mind with reference to the purposes of expression, and the actual demands of oral or written communication. The greatest fault of the work is that of incorporating so (5)About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. • Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases: Classified And Arranged So As To Facilitate The Expression Of Ideas And Assist In Literary Composition

    Peter Mark Roget

Paperback (Cambridge University Press, Nov. 6, 2014)
Peter Mark Roget (1779-1869), of Huguenot stock, trained as a physician in Edinburgh and London, yet he was increasingly drawn to the sciences, corresponding with Erasmus Darwin, Thomas Beddoes and Humphry Davy. He practised medicine (free of charge) in London at the Northern Dispensary, which he co-founded, and lectured on physiology and medical topics. His Bridgewater Treatise, on animal and vegetable physiology, is also reissued in the Cambridge Library Collection. Roget is remembered today for the present work, first published in 1852 following his retirement from professional duties. As the preface makes clear, he had contemplated such a work for nearly fifty years. It supplies a vocabulary of English words and idiomatic phrases 'arranged ... according to the ideas which they express'. The thesaurus, continually expanded and updated, has always remained in print, but this reissued first edition shows the impressive breadth of Roget's own knowledge and interests.

Excerpt from Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases: So Classified and Arranged as to Facilitate the Expression of Ideas and Assist in Literary CompositionIn preparing the Appendix, many words and phrases have been added to the very copious collection of the author such additional expressions are enclosed in brackets. The publishers have noticed, with some interest, that the author of the work has, in his new and stereotyped edition, adopted the form of the Amer ican edition, as being more portable and convenient and also that he has incorporated, though silently, various additions which were introduced by the American Editor. It is proper here to state, that the present edition has been prepared under the editorial care of Prof. J ohn L. Lincoln, of Brown University. With these remarks, the volume is submitted to the public, in the hope that, in its enlarged and improved form, it will reach a still wider range of circulation and usefulness.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Thb design of the preseni work it to offer a condensed and metbodloal CT reatiie on that important department of Natural Philosophy which iom0 pri e9 the diversified phenomena of Eiectricity and Magnetism Theie phenomena, which were formerly regarded aa tbeeffecta of two perfectly distinct agents, are now discovered to have an intimate relation to one another, and, in all probability, to be dependent on one and the same principle :in like manner as it was found by Newton, that the eimpler mechanical phenomena of the universe are the results of the tingle principle of gravitation. A succinct and connected account of the numerous discoveries which the exertions of philosophers have recently brought to light on this highly interesting branch of physical science, collected from the various scientific Journals and Transactions through which they are dispersed, and }digested in a didactic order, seemed to be particularly wanting, and to be especially calculated to further the objects of theS ociety for theD iffusion fof Useful Knowledge. In pursuance of this design, I have aimed at giving to the subjects treated as much condensation as was compatible with perN spicuity. I have endeavoured to conduct the student, by a regular progres sion, from the simpler to the more complex topics of research; and I have also been anxious, by placing constantly before his view the distinction which exists between ascertained facts, and the hypotheses and theories devised for their explanation, to illustrate the precepts of Bacon by examples, and to foster that genuine spirit of philosophical inquiry by which alone error can be avoided and truth attained. For the many deficiencies which I fear the reader will discover in the completion of this design, I have to plead, in extenuation, the very scanty portion of leisure which the continual pressure of my professional duties leaves a(Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.)
