  • Mikey and Me and the Frogs---The Continuing Story of a Girl and Her Dog

    Penelope Dyan

Paperback (Bellissima Publishing LLC, Feb. 2, 2010)
This is another large size print book for little eyes. It contains words to build upon from the Dolch Reading Words list, as does Dyans first "Mikey and Me" book; and it is the second book in the "Mikey and Me" early learn to read large print book series. Kids can follow the continuing story of "Mikey and Me" and learn to read and have some fun while doing it! Parents and teachers can use the words from this book to make flash cards and play some fun games, and will be surprised at how well the kids will do when they open their reading books, because these are the very same words used in school textbooks, presented in a new and fun way! Penelope Dyan, the author and illustrator of this book, is a former K-12 teacher with experience in teaching kids how to read. Published in Humpty Dumpty Children's Magazine, The Kindergartner, and also in Instructor Magazine, the magazine that teaches teachers how to teach, she has developed her own system of teaching children to read, and that system is simply to have fun, because learning really is fun. Dyan remembers her first trip to the library and the stories her father told her about his visits to the library when he was a boy, and all of that gave her a special love of books and reading that she imparts to her young readers! The illustrations and books in this series are kid sized and kid friendly as are all Dyan's books for kids, proving once again that Bellissima loves kids of all ages!
  • The Comeback Kids, Book 6, The Osprey

    Penelope Dyan

Hardcover (Bellissima Publishing LLC, June 28, 2015)
Say hello to another comeback kid, the osprey. The osprey, like the California brown pelican and the American bald eagle, was once the victim of the pesticide DDT that caused its shells to become brittle and break, interfering with the ospreys' reproductive cycles. That combined with humans removing dead trees in which ospreys nested because they needed leafless trees in which to nest and make a quick escape (because osprey wings easily got caught in dense foliage) resulted in the osprey being categorized in several states (in America) as endangered. Again, it is a case of us doing nothing proactive to reverse the course or fate of the osprey. All we had to do was provide habitat by not destroying it and stop using DDT! (Platforms on top of utility poles and not removing dead trees was a simple enough course of action. And use of DDT has been banned in the United States.) Now these fisher birds fly high in the skies and dive into the water for fish as they continue their comeback and prove anything is possible! A great book for kids, and a beautiful book for the coffee table, Bellissima Publishing, LLC has done it again with a book to educate, entertain and delight!

  • There Are Bees In My Trees!

    Penelope Dyan

Paperback (Bellissima Publishing LLC, April 23, 2009)
Sometimes bees happen to take up residence in very strange places, and a beekeeper has to be called to move them to a new hive. Bees can sting you, and sometimes that hurts a lot; so you need to be very careful about bees. However, all creatures have their place in the ecosystem, and this is a very important concept children need to learn and know. That said, everything has its place, and bees in the walls of homes need to be moved to a hive that is outside where it is safe for everyone, even if it means the mouse must also go. Read the poetry and enjoy the funny illustrations of Penelope Dyan as your child learns about one small part of the ecosystem in one very small way, and about how we all have to make adjustments (sometimes) in our lives, even mice and bees. Use this little book as a sounding board to discuss place and change, and about how all things work together for good, even if we have to make a compromise (as these bees had to leave). Penelope Dyan, author of 'Surfer Girl,' best teen book at the 2008 New York Book Festival and best teen book at the 2008 Hollywood Book Festival, a former teacher and attorney, really understands kids. She brings all her knowledge and love of children with her as she writes her books, and like all Bellissima Books, her books have a lesson and a purpose.
