  • Prince Jonathan's War: A Bible Story

    Mick Michaels

language (Defiant Publishing LLC, May 15, 2012)
The Philistines have taken over Israel and King Saul needs to run them out. But he's too scared to fight. His son, Prince Jonathan, is ready to trust God. He and his armor bearer have gone to fight the enemy alone. But the Philistine army is pretty big. Have they made a big mistake?* * * * * Mick Michaels thinks first grade readers need exciting books like the ones adults enjoy. So he's creating what you might call "first grade novels" — books that are more involved than easy readers but not as big as chapter books. They tell science fiction stories, fantasy stories, myths and legends, and other types of action-adventure tales that will appeal to most modern kids, especially boys. These action-adventure books average 2000-2500 words, each with 5 or 6 chapters of around 400 words or less. Each chapter includes a couple of illustrations to help ease the transition from picture-oriented books to text-oriented books. The sentences sound more adult than "See Spot run. Run, Spot, run!" but aren't overly complex. While each book includes two or three challenging new words, the vast majority of words are already part of a first-grader's vocabulary. And each book is checked by a children's librarian to make sure the reading levels are appropriate for young readers. This book is for kids reading on a level of 2-3.Young readers love action-adventure stories. If you want to encourage them to read, give them books they'll love!

  • Memoirs of a Caddie: Life and Times of a Misguided Youth

    Patrick Michael Burke

(CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, July 22, 2014)
Located just outside the City of Chicago, Fairview Country Club functioned as an adult playground for some of the City’s most wealthy and influential politicians, business owners and investment bankers. Fairview became their escape from the everyday, the one place where they didn’t have to worry about putting on airs. For caddies, Fairview became a sort of rite of passage, a place where you entered as a naïve child and left as a man, armed with the bizarre and wonderful knowledge that will shape your life for years to come. MEMOIRS OF A CADDIE: LIFE AND TIMES OF A MISGUIDED YOUTH explores the 8-year stint that I served as a country club caddie in near-suburban Chicago, focusing on such critical events such as: • The Caddie Masters: “Unwilling to leave the country club grounds, Rob had taken to sleeping in his car; his two poodles huddled up against in an attempt to keep warm at night. Every morning, he would wake up and wash himself in the bathroom sink before heading down to his desk to begin his “work” day, pretending as if he had never been informed that his employment at Fairview had been terminated. It was his final act of rebellion against the people that he despised.” • The Belt Game: “The Belt Game brought something out of its contestants that few other life events, short of war, could ever have. For five to ten minutes, those young men were battling for their lives, rapidly adapting to this newfound “Kill or Be Killed” world.” • The Summer Heat: “As they moved around the altar, I could capture glimpses of their eyes, wild and ancient, completely lost in the moment, dedicated to giving all energy towards their ceremonial dance.”

  • The Krilt's Secret Weapon: The Adventures of Captain Nexus

    Mick Michaels

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Aug. 28, 2012)
Captain Nexus and First Mate Scopes are on a secret mission. The Border Space Worlds are in danger because the Krilt have a new secret weapon. Nexus and Scopes have to find it and destroy it! But are they ready for what they'll find? * * * * * Mick Michaels thinks early readers need exciting books like the ones adults enjoy. So he's creating what you might call "first novels" -- books that are more involved than easy readers but not as big as chapter books. They tell science fiction stories, fantasy stories, myths and legends, and other types of action-adventure tales that will appeal to most modern kids, especially boys. Some are standalone stories, while others like Captain Nexus are part of a series. These action-adventure books average 2000-2500 words, each with 5 or 6 chapters averaging 400 words or less. Each chapter includes a couple of illustrations to help ease the transition from picture-oriented books to text-oriented books. The sentences sound more adult than "See Spot run. And each book is checked by a children's librarian to make sure the reading levels are appropriate for young readers. Let Captain Nexus and his crew introduce your child to the joy of reading science fiction! "The Krilt's Secret Weapon is a great Early Reader for children that like science fiction but aren?t ready for Science Fiction chapter books. This book will pull you right in on this mission immediately as you look at the map and go to work figuring out how far they have to travel and what will happen next! Will Captain Nexus follow orders that he has been given or will the mission call for him to do more? They will enjoy this amazing ride with Captain Nexus, Scopes, Dr. Lish and Freggy! This book will be great for children reading on a level 2-3." -- Carolyn Lowery, Librarian Assistant, Public Library-Central Branch, Forsyth County NC
