  • Ice Cream Poems: Reflections on Life with Ice Cream

    Patricia Fargnoli

Paperback (World Enough Writers, May 17, 2017)
Ice cream, ice cream, who wants ice cream? Hundreds of poets not only said a resounding "yes," but wrote about it. And from those hundreds, I accepted the 125 poems you will find here from 27 different states plus Australia, France, Iraq, Spain, and Tunisia. The poems are as various as the flavors of ice cream: long poems, short poems, and in addition to traditional free-verse narratives and lyrics: experimental poems, poems in forms such as sestinas, sapphics, sonnets, prose poems. When I accepted the job of editing, I wondered if I'd be bored by so many poems about ice cream; I wondered whether there would be hundreds of poems about The Good Humor Man or Dairy Queen. But I needn't have worried, I was never bored. The Good Humor Man and Dairy Queen poems were there, of course, but I was amazed by the wide variety of subjects: light humorous poems, sweet poems, lusty poems, dark poems, poems about childhood memories, a poem about Obama's first date, and a poem with Paul Newman in it. I am pleased with this final collection of ice cream poems. I think readers will enjoy them as much as I enjoyed reading and selecting them.--Patricia Fargnoli, Editor, author of Hallowed (Tupelo Press, 2017)

Sometimes, what begins as a terrible idea, can turn out to be just the most fantastic, incredible, magical adventure ever.Brother and sister, Steven and Nicki Carlyle, are city kids. The last thing they want to do, for the rest of their summer vacation, is spent it on a farm in the middle of nowhere. But, sometimes, being a kid just isn’t fair. They don’t have a choice.Thirteen years old, Steven knows he’ll be bored to death with no internet and no wi-fi. Nicki, at 10, can’t imagine spending a month away from her friends. But what starts as a horrible experience, turns out to be something quite different. When they get on the bus to rural New York, they have no idea just how far it will take them, across country and across time. They can’t imagine what is waiting for them. Oh, there are lots of animals and plenty of work to do, it’s a farm after all. And Aunt Flo and Uncle Harold are wonderful, but the other kids in the neighborhood are not about to accept them. They must make their own fun and depend on each other. While exploring the farm they find an abandoned Spring House, and that’s where the magic begins. When they walk into the fog, they find themselves somewhere and sometime very different. They discover they are in the year 1779 and in the middle of the Revolutionary War. They meet Amanda and Nathaniel Van Boer, a sister and brother about their own ages, there and learn about their lives. The time is dangerous. Will the four kids become involved in the troubles? Can they protect the van Boer family and neighbors? But what can they do? They’re only kids after all. The author, Patricia Faber, has loved the adventure and magic of books since she was old enough to read. Sharing this love of books is why she began writing books of her own. History is another love of hers and making history come alive, for her readers, is the reason behind the writing of her ‘Adventures in Time Series’. A long-time resident of Western New York, she features the beauty and history of this area in the first book in this new series. She now lives in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with her Fat Cat, Oscar. She is currently working on the second book in the ‘Adventures in Time Series’ and a story about an ancestor of hers called ‘A Drummer Boy’.
