Then I want one of your previous lives to come forward. Is that clear?”Rachel nods and mumbles: “Yes,” right before her eyes close.“You’re sleeping,” the old lady croaks. “Now, who will come forward?”Calvin stares at Rachel; she really looks like she’s sitting upright sleeping, chin resting on her chest, breathing softly.“She’s not saying anything,” Calvin mutters.“Sssh!” Madam Spinoza hisses, not taking her eyes off Rachel. “Who will come forward?”A few more moments pass. Then, suddenly, Rachel says: “It’s me. Elmer Hedrick.” The voice is completely different, deeper and rawer.“Hello, Elmer,” the hypnotist says. “How old are you, boy?”“Ten,” Rachel says, not lifting her head or opening her eyes. “It was my birthday yesterday.”“Really? Did you get any gifts?”“No.”“Didn’t your parents buy you anything?”“No.”“How come?”“They’re dead.”“I’m sorry to hear that. When did they die?”“Yesterday.”Madam Spinoza raises her thin eyebrows, showing the first sign of surprise. “They died on your birthday? Both of them?”“Yes.”“Was it a car crash?”Rachel shows her teeth in a sneer. “A what? I don't understand that word.”The hypnotist smacks her dry lips. “What time are you living in, Elmer? What year is it?”“Nineteen oh three, of course.”“I’ll say,” Madam Spinoza mutters, seemingly talking to herself. “It’s very rare I get one this far back … How did your parents die, Elmer?”“They got their throats cut open with a knife.”“Goodness! Did the police catch the killer?”“No.”“I’m sure they’ll get him.”“I don’t think so.”“Why not?”Rachel doesn’t answer. Calvin notices her face tic.“Elmer?” the hypnotist asks. “Why don’t you think the police will catch the one who murdered your parents?”Rachel lifts her head and opens her eyes, staring straight at the old lady. “Because I made it look like someone else did it.”Calvin feels his stomach tighten.Madam Spinoza looks befuddled. “Close your eyes, Rachel. You’re not supposed to open then until I—”“Rachel isn’t here,” she interrupts, her voice raising in a sudden fury. “My name is Elmer!”

REVIEWS“Nice and creepy reading ... a fantastic book”★★★★★ Luna's Coffee Nook“A really good collection, I warmly recommend it. Anything.”“Sure, don’t worry.”Oliver picks up the rope and throws it down the well. He takes a few deep breaths and climbs over the edge, clutching the rope. As he sits with his feet dangling over the abyss, he almost regrets it.“You can do it,” Mason whispers behind him. That gives Oliver the courage. He lets himself slide down and hangs by the rope. The cold, clammy air immediately engulfs him as he starts climbing downwards. Oliver is pretty good at sports, and he has no real problem in holding his own weight as he works his way down the rope. He walks his feet down the inside of the well like a rock-climber.The darkness draws in closer, the smell intensifies, the temperature drops, as Oliver descends farther and farther down.He looks up. The opening is now a light-blue circle, the dark silhouette of Mason peering down at him.“You all right?” Mason asks, his voice ringing hollowly around Oliver.“I’m fine,” Oliver says, but he doesn’t feel very fine. He looks down, but can still only see darkness beneath him.How much longer do I have to climb down? What if the well just keeps going? That's silly, I heard the rock hit the bottom. But what if something is waiting for me down there? He recalls the figurine they found in the abandoned house, and suddenly he can vividly imagine the churel standing at the bottom of the well, staring up at him in bated silence, the long black tongue slithering hungrily across the broken lips, as she waits patiently for him to come close enough so she can reach up her abnormally long arms and grab him by the ankles …Oliver is close to panic. He clutches the rope feverishly, closing his eyes hard, unable to take even one step farther down.“Something wrong?” Mason asks.Oliver is breathing rapidly through his nose, trying desperately to keep the panic down. He could really have used a flashlight right now. After a few seconds he gets hold of himself, and he’s able to call out: “No, still fine!”He climbs down another yard. Two. Three. How deep is this goddamn thing ...?
