    On the cover crowning a cobra with a flower, a worshiper expresses the reverence Shirala's people feel about the snake. On page 393 The Cobra India's "Good Snake." Millions of Hindus associates the cobra with the sacred lingam, symbol of Lord Shiva. The snake also wins praises as an exterminator of the rat. India's only true cobra, Naja Naja ranges across the entire subcontinent extending as far north as Kashmir. Once a year many Hindus celebrate the great serpent festival called Naga Panchami and nowhere more dramatically than in the little village of Shirala, in west-central India. The villagers believe that Siva offered on of their ancient sages a boon. The sage asked that his people be protected for all time against the cobras so common in their fields. The boon was granted, and ever since then the people of Shirala have believed they have nothing to fear from the cobra, emblem of the god himself. On page 299 New Mexico the Golden Land. Big bold land offers ample room for three ways of life: Indian, Spanish, and "Anglo." An odd coincidence that the state which has become a proving ground for our most modern weapons should also be the one where Ice Age weapons were first found on this continent. On July 16, 1945 the first atomic bomb was detonated by physicists from Los Alamos one can peer through a fence at the Trinity Site and see faint traces of the foundation tower that supported "Fat man" bomb now a simple rock monument 60 miles of Alamogordo in a desert named Jornada del Muerto (Journey of the Dead). In 1926 at Folsom in New Mexico's northeast corner, scientists discovered 10,000 year old stone dart points of Ice Age nomads. Today Los Alamos home of the Atomic Energy Commission's Sandia Laboratories at Albuquerque is charged with development of rockets capable of interplanetary travel. Here is also found ancient Pueblo Indian country the Sky City of Acoma is one of the oldest continuously occupied villages in the U.S.
