  • The Life Stories of Undistinguished Americans: As Told by Themselves

    Hamilton Holt

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Sept. 2, 2017)
This collection of short autobiographies, compiled and edited by Hamilton Holt, offers an eye-opening account of how ordinary Americans lived and worked at the turn of the 20th century. The contributors to this collection were anonymous, drawn from various vocations of American society. The occupations range from laborer to dressmaker to domestic servant to peddlar and bootblack. A minority of the accounts are dictated, but the bulk are written or edited from manuscripts solicited by the original publisher. We witness a society which had, owing to decades of immigration from around the world, become industrious and diverse. Several contributors to this collection are first generation immigrants; for many the conditions of the United States at the time were jarringly different. Some yearn for their homelands, and for the comforts and customs which they left behind, while others openly admire the attitude and values of the country they have come to call home. Not only do we gain a historic perspective of the USA, we also learn how life was for certain contributors in their homelands. The contrast between the bustling, industrialized cities of America and the generally quieter homelands is marked. The most obvious trend across all of the tales however is the immense detail of everyday living, of the hard work, of the budgeting and money sent to relatives at home. Despite being ordinary, everyday people, each has a tale or a perspective that sheds insight upon life. Emotions and human qualities leap from the pages: the dignity and naive intellectualism of the Japanese servant; the ambition and genial pride of the French dressmaker; the determination and faith of the visually impaired preacher; the traditionalism and community of a Chinese laundryman. The Life Stories of Undistinguished Americans is a valuable and vivid collection of anecdotes worthy of attention and possessed of additional, historic value in the modern day.

    J R Hamilton

Paperback (Dead Key Publishing, April 6, 2016)
After 14 months of riding riverboats in Viet Nam, TJ Hamlin receives orders to Naval Air Station backyard duty in his hometown of Corpus Christi. It had been three years since he had seen his brothers from the club, and he was looking forward to long rides in the South Texas sun on his old ’59 custom Harley. Little did he know he would end up working undercover for the Navy as a bouncer in a local bar, running for his life, and becoming involved in taking down a drug ring within his own motorcycle club. In TJ Rides, the first book in a planned series, TJ is torn between his dedication to the brothers in the club and his desire to stop drugs from tearing down the only real family he has known. When he discovers who is involved in the operation, he is torn even more, but when a friend is murdered, TJ is focused on one thing: revenging his friend at all costs. In the style of Robert Parker's Spencer and James Lee Burke's Dave Robicheaux, J.R. Hamilton has created in TJ a character to capture the imagination and propel the desire to keep reading more adventures.

    Hamilton Holt

language (Reload Printing, Feb. 20, 2020)
Much has been written about historic presidents, generals and business owners. But what was life like for the ordinary men and women who lived in the nineteenth century?Hamilton Holt choses to focus not on “great men”, but instead provides snapshots into the lives those who are often forgotten in history books: immigrants, sweatshop workers, bootblacks, peddlers, dressmakers, nurses, cooks, travelling ministers, ex-slaves, displaced Native Americans, servants, and laborers. These were the men and women who made America great.Without the impact of these forgotten figures generals would not have been able to win battles, business owners would not have created new products and presidents would have no power. Holt’s book is an essential work of nineteenth century social history that will enlighten readers into what life was like for ordinary people.Hamilton Holt was an American educator, editor, author and politician. He was an outspoken advocate for reform, prohibition, immigrant rights, and international peace.
