In the village of La Mancha lives a fifty-year-old man, an old-fashioned gentleman who always has with him a lance, an old target, a scrawny horse, and a greyhound. He eats more beef than mutton and three-fourths of his income is spent on food; he spends the rest on velvet robe and slippers for holidays and a suit of the very best homespun cloth for the rest of the year. His family includes a fortyish housekeeper, a teen-aged niece, and a serving man who works both inside and outside of the estate and can saddle a horse. The gentleman is fit and hearty, a lover of hunting, and according to tradition his surname is Quixana, though that is not a certainty.

Don Quixote is one of the most famous characters in literature. His name has become a word, "quixotic," that means to do something foolishly impractical for the sake of a high ideal. Equally famous is his companion Sancho Panza. As Don Quixote wanders Spain thinking of himself as a storybook knight-errant, Sancho takes the role of the knight's loyal squire. Don Quixote is idealistic and intelligent, but crazy, because he is living in the everyday world but believing it is the world of romances. He is too old and weak to be a knight-errant, but he doesn't think so. Sancho has solid common sense and sees everyday reality clearly, but he is ignorant and willing to lie. He knows it is useless to try to reason with madmen and so he plays along, hoping to find a profit in it. Cervantes seems to wish we could mix the best qualities of this knight and squire in ourselves; then we would see our everyday selves as we truly are and still strive to be nobler and better.

“Don Quixote” is a novel by a Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes.Don Quixote is engrossed in a book about ancient chivalry. He falls asleep and dreams that he is a knight defending his ideal woman, Dulcinea. His vision is disrupted when Sancho Panza bursts through the study door. The gluttonous Sancho has stolen a ham and a group of exasperated housewives are pursuing him. Startled by the commotion, Don Quixote turns the angry women out of the room. An idea then comes to Don Quixote. He will make Sancho his squire and together the two will set out on an adventure to defend virtue and punish those who transgress the code of chivalry. "Don Quixote" is one of the most significant works by Spanish and the worldwide literature. It is important because it has the first characteristics of novels that we know today such as a long, complex story, characterized characters, a clear critic of society and art. Besides that Don Quixote is the second most translated and published work after the Bible. It set the foundation of the western European literature and it is considered to be one of the best fictional works ever. The main character, Don Quixote, just like his sidekick Sancho Panza became icons of culture and the symbols of idealistic fighters – dreamers that have more love for heroic acts than victory. The motive of the windmills, the so-called “tilting at windmills” is a well-known symbol of a made up, needless fight and it was first brought to life in this novel. Every time we use that expression we are actually referring to the novel.
