Toby Swann’s First Year, by Michael Persaud, was inspired by the British novel The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole which the author read as a teenager. The only twist is that the former is set in Toronto, Canada, and is reflective of North American culture (Canada being in such close proximity to the United States). This novel is very witty, and at times, laugh out loud funny, due to the many odd situations the main character Toby Swann gets himself into. Toby Swann also has a little sister, Stacey, who is a child prodigy, a cute girlfriend named Ainsley, and a best friend, Daniel, who can be challenging despite him and Toby being buddies. The story takes place during the years 1998/ 1999 and incorporates news events that were occurring at the time both in Canada and the United States. It evokes Toronto as it was then when it comes to landmarks like the former home of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Maple Leaf Gardens, and certain retailers that existed at the time (i.e. Sam The Record Man, Cyber Cafe), to mention just a few, and how life was then just on the cusp of the Internet. The novel does not talk down to the teenage reader but speaks to them in a language they would understand and relate to. This book is recommended for ages 15 to 19. It would also serve to be a fine, entertaining read for adults. WARNING: laughter may ensue.
