  • Oh, What a Christmas Book and Audio CD

    Michael Garland

Audio CD (Scholastic, March 15, 2011)
Christmas Eve is here! Santa's sled is loaded with goodies and gifts for children around the world, but when the reins connecting his flying reindeer snap Santa is going to need some extra help. Fortunately for Santa he lands in a barn full of animals ready for a Christmas adventure in the skies! Before you know it the presents are delivered and there's a special surprise for Santa's newest helpers. This is purely a fun enjoyable Christmas read for little ones and those reading it to them. Both of my children spend most of the book in fits of giggles as they watch the weary barn animals fly through the air helping Santa. Even though we don't stress Santa much in our home they do know that he certainly shouldn't be being helped by barn animals, but his reindeer. What we try to stress is that it's important to help however we can when someone is in need, which is just what the barn animals do no matter how confused they may be about accomplishing the task at hand. This new take on the classic Twas the Night Before Christmas is incredibly delightful. Michael Garland applies his characteristic gorgeous illustrations to a fun adventure with Santa and an entire cast of weary but helpful barn animals. Oh, What A Christmas! is a picture book we'll continue to read each and every Christmas season as we strive to bring laughter and a spirit of giving to our home.
  • Two Men and a Car: Franklin Roosevelt, Al Capone, and a Cadillac V-8

    Michael Garland

eBook (Tilbury House Publishers, April 2, 2019)
It is December 8, 1941, the day after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, and President Franklin Delano Roosevelt leads a nation in crisis. He must make a speech to a joint session of Congress that will build support for America’s entry to World War II, but to do that he needs an armored vehicle in which to make the short trip from the White House to the Capitol Building. According to legend, the car Roosevelt rode in that day, borrowed from the FBI’s impound lot, was an armored Cadillac V-8 built for gangster Al Capone in the late 1920s to shield himself from enemies. Is the legend true, or is it an American tall tale in the tradition of Paul Bunyan or John Henry? Either way, it’s an ideal vehicle to compare and contrast the lives of two American men who grew up within miles of one another: one a great president, the other an infamous villain.F&P Level Y

  • Daddy Played the Blues

    Michael Garland

eBook (Tilbury House Publishers, Sept. 11, 2017)
*Notable Social Studies Trade Books Selection for Young People 2018*“I was six years old the day we left the farm in Mississippi,” remembers Cassie in this richly textured picture book. “Between the boll weevils, the floods, and the landlord, there was no way a family could scratch out a living there anymore.”Packing themselves into an old jalopy—with Daddy, Uncle Vern, and Mama in the front seat and Cassie and her two brothers in the back—they joined the Great Migration from the impoverished Deep South to Chicago, where there was work to be had in the stockyards. Across the kids’ laps lay Daddy’s prized possession, a six-string guitar. Daddy worked hard to put food on the table, but what he really loved was playing the blues. This evocative tale of the African-American odyssey in search of a better life is also a homage to the uniquely American music that developed from African music and American spirituals, work songs, and folk ballads. In the book’s backmatter, Garland relates how he first heard and fell in love with blues music, beginning a lifelong fandom. Portraits and thumbnail biographies of great blues musicians and landmark songs complete this tribute to the great American music and the yearnings that produced it.Fountas & Pinnell Level S
