Marks mother answers his questions, then they watch the birds in action. Marks mother encourages him to discover for himself how and what the seagulls like to eat. Mark and his mother make themselves comfortable and watch as the seagulls do their work on the seashore. Eventually, a seagull reveals the secret. This appealing childrens story succeeds on many levels the children will find it entertaining, and parents will appreciate the learning opportunities the story offers. Many topics are brought to mind for optional parental discussion, including the food chain and the value of learning through quiet observation. Even the youngest children will appreciate Maxims illustrations. Her realistic shells and gulls capture the ambience of the seashore and provide children with a recognizable frame of reference.
