Excerpt from The Little IliadBut sentiment, which in England carries its head so high, carries also lance and shield, and presents a brave front to the wind and the rain. The harder, indeed, it blows, the more bravely pricks the gentle knight. It is fair weather that brings him down. For he carries with him, too, his own bane; a little worm which gropes a way into his marrow, and inflames the Optic nerve.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. About the Book Fairy tales, wonder tales, magic tales are a folklore genre taking the form of a short story that typically includes magical beings such as dragons, elves, fairies, giants, gnomes, goblins, griffins, mermaids, talking animals, trolls, unicorns, or witches. Generally, magic or enchantments are involved. Fairy tales are distinguished from legends, are mainly derived from European tradition and folk lore, and are generally children's literature. Mythology has a broader and older pedigree than fairy tales, dating back to ancient times in a number of European, African, Middle Eastern and Asian civilizations. Best known among these to Western audiences are Ancient Greek and Old Norse myths and legends. Generally, these myths and legends describe epic quests, journeys and interactions between human adventurers or heroes and god-like deities. Also in this Book A short story collection is a book that contains short stories written by a single author. • New Canterbury Tales

    Maurice Hewlett

Paperback (Forgotten Books, Dec. 1, 2017)
Excerpt from New Canterbury TalesMedway chose that they must. So doing, tend ing from old English burgh to old Roman, they followed a road incredibly older than that from London; for long before their day or Saint Thomas's, English feet, Latin feet, British and (if the tale be true) Trojan feet had trudged ir, bringing mine up from the West to be smithied in the forests of Sussex, then loaded into galleys whose helmsmen knew all the shoals at the Nore. You may well doubt whether there had been any other path for slave or legionary or wild adven turer of the North through those impenetrable wealden woods. My pilgrims, then, took this ancient road, assembling for the purpose at W'in Chester, as nearly as possible upon the Feast of Saints Philip and Jacob, which was in the year of Christ's reign fourteen-hundred and fifty, and in the twenty-eighth year of that of King Henry VI., a pious, unhappy, and nearly imbecile monarch, quite damned in a magnanimous wife.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
