It was subsequently made into two movies, a silent version and another version with sound during the forties, updated for that time period. Set in Southern England at the turn of the last century, the book is a work of Social Realism. It was, in many aspects, ahead of its time, dealing with an unhappy marriage, divorce, and suicide. It is the story of Mark Sabre and his descent into a series of disasters. Other interesting characters do present themselves, but all exist only to fill out the main story. Through all the bleakness and despair, hope always remains, as demonstrated by the quotation alluded to in the title, "If Winter Comes, can Spring be far behind?"
