  • Through Spain to the Sahara

    Matilda B etham-Edwards

    eBook (@AnnieRoseBooks, Jan. 31, 2018)
ON a golden autumn afternoon we found ourselves in the old city of Tours, bound for Spain and the enchanted lands lying north of the Great Sahara. Pleasant it was to look backward and forward; backward to the busy life in England, forward to the bright holiday of travel, repeating to ourselves again and again the sentiment, if not the words, of Catullus:—
  • The Roof of France: The Causses of the Lozère

    Matilda Betham-Edwards

    Paperback (BiblioBazaar, Sept. 27, 2006)
The traveller in France will not unseldom liken his fortunes to those of Saul the son of Kish, who, setting forth in search of his father’s asses, found a kingdom; or, to use a homelier parable, will compare his case to that of the donkey between two equally-tempting bundles of hay.

  • Under the German Ban in Alsace and Lorraine

    Matilda Betham-Edwards

Paperback (Forgotten Books, July 20, 2012)
Alsace and the annexed portion of Lorraine. If any remarks of mine appear exaggerated I beg the reader to turn to the final chapter in which I cite from most accredited French authors, who, like myself, have visited, revisited, and revisited again the annexed provinces. All tell the same tale. From the days of Edmond A bout down to our own, here there is no divergence. A like the late lamented and genial administrator of the Comedie Francaise, M. Jules Claretie, M. Maurice Barres, and M. A. Hallays, exactly bear out my own conviction based upon experiences among the French subjects of the German Emperor with every year of annexation detestation of Prussian tyranny has but grown deeper and deeper.(Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.)About the Publisher Forgotten Books is a publisher of historical writings, such as: Philosophy, Classics, Science, Religion, History, Folklore and Mythology.Forgotten Books' Classic Reprint Series utilizes the latest technology to regenerate facsimiles of historically important writings. • Through Spain to the Sahara ...

    Matilda Betham-Edwards

Paperback (Ulan Press, Aug. 31, 2012)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
  • Through Spain to the Sahara

    Matilda Betham-Edwards

Paperback (Cambridge University Press, Sept. 30, 2010)
Journalist, children's author and translator, Matilda Betham-Edwards inspired a generation of writers. A correspondent of Henry James and a friend of George Eliot, she belonged to a literary network that spanned the globe. Published in 1868, her account of her journey to the Sahara received immediate critical acclaim for its graceful prose and intelligent insights. Leading readers through the Dordogne to Madrid and on to the mosques and malaria of North Africa, Edwards introduces her audience to relics, landscapes and ancient edifices that reflect a wide spectrum of religions and societies. A farmer's daughter, she pays special attention to the living and working conditions of agricultural communities and their struggle for survival in nineteenth-century Europe. As one reviewer for the Examiner explained, 'stay at home readers can hardly do their travelling by proxy more easily than by running through her entertaining pages'.
