  • Saint Nicholas : The Story of the Real Santa Claus

    Mary Joslin

Paperback (Lion Pub Plc, Aug. 31, 2004)
Nicholas was a Christian who lived in the town of Myra in the fourth century AD. He was much loved for his charity and generosity. On one occasion, he wanted to give money to three daughters who were facing destitution because their father had no money for a dowry in order that they might marry. Nicholas thought of a clever way to give his gift in secret, showering gold coins into their house at night through the chimney. Some of the coins landed in the stockings that had been hung up to dry there. His good deed brought a happily-ever-after ending, and inspired a Christmas tradition. This book is retold for children from the famous thirteenth-century book by Jacopo de Voraigne, The Golden Legend.
  • A Treasury of Wisdom

    Mary Joslin

Hardcover (Augsburg Fortress Publishers, May 22, 2019)
I am Wisdom, I am better than jewels; nothing you want can compare with me. I walk the way of righteousness; I follow the paths of justice, giving wealth to those who love me, filling their houses with treasures. I love those who love me; whoever looks for me can find me. From Proverbs 8 In times of confusion, stagnancy, or pain, words of wisdom can serve as a beacon, directing you through darkness and toward light. The various writings in A Treasury of Wisdom have been selected for just this purpose. Whether the words of Jesus, Shakespeare, or Francis of Assisi, the wisdom within this treasury will challenge your thinking and help to direct your steps, whenever you may need it. You may open its pages with a particular theme in mind, diligently searching for words of advice. Other times, you may flip through the pages more idly, allowing your attention to pause or wander as it will. However you choose to use the collection, you will surely find glimpses of hope, clarity, and truth hidden within-- treasures that are greater than gold.
  • The Shore Beyond

    Mary Joslin

Hardcover (Good Books, Oct. 25, 2000)
Can-do girls. Inquisitive girls. Despite their long braids and flowing skirts. Clara and her friend Miriam need to know what happens on the other side of the lake where Clara's father rows every morning. And what goes on down river. And what happens beyond the ocean's breakers. And, finally, how to reach the golden point where gleaming ocean and sun-brushed sky meet. Restless to discover what lies just out-of-reach, Clara finally gets to co-pilot her father's ferry boat to the distant shore. Too hard work and too boring a job, she pronounces when she realizes her first wish. Undeterred by choppy waters and miles of swirling river, Clara is ready for more adventure, drawn by greater unknowns. Even when Miriam finds a new home--and satisfaction--Clara wants to go on, to a place that will make my spirit dance. She turns to an old sailor who has been everywhere. He doesn't teach her how to row, as her father did, or how to make her own boat, as Miriam did. But he tells her what to watch for and how to travel. Clara's urgent longing finds a match in the sailor's mysterious, but knowing, intrigue. Soft paintings throughout are as full of wonder as the text. They capture the pastoral and the world of watery edges, the secure and the vastly unknown beyond.
