Excerpt from Sketches of Life and Character in HungaryIt is primarily in a spirit of gratitude that my fellow traveller and I dedicate to you this sketch of our wanderings in your Land: but lurking in my mind is the wish to tell you that I hold you in part responsible for the existence of this little book. We crossed your path, as strangers in quest of the pictur esque, and endowed with a great capacity for enjoyment. To this capacity you so ministered, that I for my part felt constrained to put my pen to an unfamiliar use, and to endeavour to tell the story of the summer days you gave us. That faults of inexperience should straw these pages is, I fear, inevitable. That some errors have crept in, is, I fear, but too probable; these, even if they should do injustice to your countrymen, I feel sure you will pardon, knowing me innocent in intention.
