  • Encounters in Yellowstone: The Nez Perce Summer of 1877

    M. Mark Miller

    eBook (TwoDot, Oct. 7, 2019)
On August 23, 1877, a scout named Jack Bean watched 600 Nez Perce Indians head into the new Yellowstone National Park. Bean rushed 60 miles to the nearest telegraph office to tell the army where the Indians were going. He didn’t take time to warn tourists who were visiting the park that was then a roadless wilderness. The Indians flight for freedom is a touchstone of the history of the American West, so most people know about their 1,200-mile running battle with the army that ended just forty miles from the Canadian border and freedom. However few know the stories of the confrontations between the Nez Perce and park tourists. Encounters in Yellowstone tells about those thrilling adventures: Emma Cowan’s watching Indians shoot her husband in the head and then taking her captive; Andrew Weikert’s blazing gun battles when he tries to rescue friends missing after an Indian attack, and George Cowan’s six-mile crawl to get help after he was shot three times and left for dead. The book tells these and other true stories with all the detail and drama of fiction.

  • Math Mammoth Grade 7-B Worktext

    Maria Miller

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, June 23, 2015)
This book has gray-scale interior pages.Math Mammoth Grade 7-B is a student worktext for the second half of grade 7 mathematics studies. The curriculum meets and exceeds the Common Core Standards (CCS) for grade 7. It exceeds them because we study the Pythagorean Theorem, which actually belongs in grade 8 in the CCS. We start out with a study of ratios and proportions. Students study unit rates, proportions, proportional relationships and graphing, scaling geometric figures, floor plans, and maps. The next chapter provides thorough lessons on the concept of percent. Students learn to solve a wide variety of problems involving percentages, including percentage of change, percentages of comparison, and simple interest problems.Geometry is our next focus. Students draw geometric figures using a protractor and a ruler, and they also learn some basic geometric constructions. The other themes of this chapter are various angle relationships, area and the perimeter of a circle, conversions between units of area and of volume, surface area, volume, and cross-sections when solids are sliced with a plane. Next, we cover square roots, the Pythagorean Theorem, and its applications. I have included the Pythagorean Theorem in order to make the curriculum work as a pre-algebra course. You can omit the entire chapter if you are following the Common Core Standards for grade 7. The next chapter is an introduction to probability. Besides learning the basic idea behind probability as the ratio of favorable events to all possible events, students compare experimental probabilities to theoretical ones in probability simulations and even design some on their own. Lastly, the curriculum covers statistical concepts. The major areas of study are random sampling and learning to compare two populations using some basic statistical measures and graphs.
