The summer holidays have begun, and look dull and depressing for them all. But, invisible forces in and around the forest park nearby have been slowly building up, unknown to the two families on the edge of the park. An unusual Day of Change has begun in which Jono, Emily and Ian will each play a key part. For fun, and to escape from horrible, bossy Aunt May who is in charge of him, Jono swaps his wheelchair for his grandpa's ride-on electric mower, races it into the park - and is taken straight into The Flat Lands, a dangerous world beyond our own world, where an old Queen is about to destroy the tree-land home of the Flat Rounds. Jono is joined by Emily and Ian, each drawn into The Flat Lands in a different way. The three of them have to use all their courage and strength to escape from the Queen and her ruthless servants: Crab Guard, Steam Roll the Obsessive, and the Rollers, all powered by the forces of the Queen’s dominating friend, Metal Man. Ian and Emily have arguments which jeopardise their escape. Metal Man tries to dominate everybody who will listen to him.The children hear the beauty of the tree music, and meet the brave, funny Rotunda, biggest of the Flat Rounds, who joins them in their struggle. They meet Old Man Daylight and the Daylight Lady who help them in unexpected ways. Then, suddenly, there are more changes: the fighting is over, but there are still further things to do before they can get back home.
