(Leopold Classic Library, Jan. 18, 2016)
About the Book Once settled by the Celts, Ireland did not experience major invasion from 500 B.C. up to 795 AD. From the year 795 there were a succession of invasions by Danish and Norwegian Vikings. Some settled along the Irish coast and founded towns such as Dublin (841). In 1014, Brian Boru, King of Munster, defeated the Vikings forces. In 1169, an Anglo-Norman army led by Richard of Clare deposed King of Leinster, and from that time, England was to have a key role in Irish history. From 1649 Oliver Cromwell pacified Ireland with great brutality. In 1798 the Revolt of the United Irishmen was severely put down. Due to the Great Famine of 1846-1848 Ireland lost, by death or emigration, around half of its 8 millions inhabitants. A decade later the revolutionary Irish Republican Brotherhood (Fenians) was founded, and in 1902 a new revolutionary movement, Sinn Fein, was founded, From 1919 to 1920 the Irish Republican Army started a war of independence againt the UK, which led to the establishment of the Irish Free State in 1921 (later changed to Eire, then in 1949 becoming the Republic of Ireland).
