  • Math Mammoth Grade 5-A Worktext

    Maria Miller

Paperback (Independently published, Oct. 23, 2019)
Please note: This version has grayscale (black-and-white) interior pages.Math Mammoth Grade 5-A is the student worktext for the first half of 5th grade mathematics studies. The book starts out with a study of whole numbers and their operations. Students review multi-digit-multiplication and learn long division with two-digit divisors. We also review divisibility and prime factorization from fourth grade. In the second chapter, the focus is on large numbers and using a calculator. This is the first time a calculator is introduced in Math Mammoth complete curriculum — thus far, all calculations have been done with mental math or with paper and pencil. I want students to learn to be critical in their use of the calculator and use it with good judgment. Every exercise where calculator use is allowed is marked with a little picture of a calculator. The third chapter is about equations and problem solving. We study simple equations with the help of a balance and bar models. The main goal is to get students used to the concept of an equation and what it means to solve an equation. Students also solve a fair amount of word problem with the help of the visual bar model. The fourth chapter is about decimals and some of the operations with decimals (the rest will be studied in chapter 6, in book 5-B). Fifth grade is the time when students learn all the basic operations with decimals. In this chapter, we focus on place value with decimals, addition and subtraction of decimals, and multiplication and division of decimals by whole numbers. Multiplying decimals by decimals and dividing decimals by decimals is covered in chapter 6.In chapter 5 we study graphing in a coordinate grid, line and bar graphs, and average and mode. Today’s world has become increasingly complex with lots of data presented in the media, so our children need a good grasp of statistical graphs to be able to make sense of all of that information. The rest of the 5th grade topics are covered in the 5-B student worktext.

  • Times New Roman: How We Quit Our Jobs, Gave Away Our Stuff & Moved to Italy

    Martha Miller

Paperback (NJM Press, Sept. 27, 2016)
Times New Roman is a true account of lifelong dreams to live abroad, experience another culture, complete an education and alter two career paths. When Martha first met John she overheard him musing about quitting his job and living in a box on a beach in Mexico. She was immediately skeptical, but secretly intrigued. Fast forward two years and they are enjoying their honeymoon in Mexico. Before marrying, they had discussed the “box on the beach” idea endlessly. The “box” was upgraded to a more stable dwelling and European countries were included in their pool of choices. They had enough money saved to bum around for a while, but then what? John was 42 and Martha was 37, too old to throw caution to the wind, too young to retire. Martha wanted to live somewhere and not feel like a tourist in city after city. She wanted to know her neighbors and understand what their lives were like. They needed a plan that would allow them to experience another culture, but also prepare them for future earnings. In Times New Roman, you will learn what that plan entailed, how they decided where to go and how they funded it themselves. Using their experiences as a backdrop, Times New Roman focuses on modern life in the Eternal City. By adapting their lifestyle, they learned how to live, eat, shop, cook and dress as the Romans do. And either through osmosis or out of necessity, they picked up some Italian behaviors they never expected.

  • Encounters in Yellowstone: The Nez Perce Summer of 1877

    M. Mark Miller

    eBook (TwoDot, Oct. 7, 2019)
On August 23, 1877, a scout named Jack Bean watched 600 Nez Perce Indians head into the new Yellowstone National Park. Bean rushed 60 miles to the nearest telegraph office to tell the army where the Indians were going. He didn’t take time to warn tourists who were visiting the park that was then a roadless wilderness. The Indians flight for freedom is a touchstone of the history of the American West, so most people know about their 1,200-mile running battle with the army that ended just forty miles from the Canadian border and freedom. However few know the stories of the confrontations between the Nez Perce and park tourists. Encounters in Yellowstone tells about those thrilling adventures: Emma Cowan’s watching Indians shoot her husband in the head and then taking her captive; Andrew Weikert’s blazing gun battles when he tries to rescue friends missing after an Indian attack, and George Cowan’s six-mile crawl to get help after he was shot three times and left for dead. The book tells these and other true stories with all the detail and drama of fiction.
