  • Me and the Pumpkin Queen

    Marlane Kennedy

Paperback (Greenwillow Books, Aug. 1, 2009)
It's just something she has to do. Mildred has always dreamed of growing a one-thousand-pound pumpkin to enter in her town's Pumpkin Show. Her aunt Arlene thinks she's obsessed, but Mildred prefers to think of herself as focused. And growing giant pumpkins is way more interesting than boys or clothes or the other girly things Aunt Arlene wants her to like. She's been trying for four long growing seasons—ever since her mama died—and every one has ended in disaster. It's not easy, especially with dogs who don't realize how delicate seedlings are, and tornadoes that could destroy months of work, and most people thinking that an eleven-year-old doesn't stand a chance. But Daddy believes in Mildred, and so does her best friend, Jacob. Maybe this will finally be her year.

The Curse of Moco Elementary will send you on an emotional roller coaster and open your mind to limitless possibilities. Proceed with Caution! Marquis Kennedy was born April 4, 1978, in Fort Worth, TX. His mother, Vanessa, raised him in Lake Como, where gangs, drugs, crime, and poverty, were "the norm". He attended Como Elementary School and graduated High School in 1996. In college, Kennedy began working with a program for at-risk youth in the surrounding neighborhoods. In 1999 he returned to Lake Como with plans to uplift and unite people, using poems, songs, television and public speaking.

  • The Dog Days of Charlotte Hayes

    Marlane Kennedy

    (Greenwillow Books, March 1, 2009)
It's not that Charlotte hates dogs. Or that she wants all of them to disappear off the face of the planet. It's just that she doesn't see why everyone loves them so much. So how did she get stuck taking care of a big, drooling Saint Bernard puppy? Rain or shine, hot or cold, poor Beauregard is left chained in the backyard. No one ever plays with him or checks his food and water bowls, and Charlotte can tell he's sad. So she makes sure he has water, gives him belly rubs—blech!—and feeds him every single day. But it's kind of a pain, and she knows Beauregard deserves better. There's a new girl at school who lives in a huge house—plenty of room there for a big dog. Charlotte has an idea. Now all she needs is a plan. Maybe a lot of plans. How do you rescue your own dog?
