•Revised edition: This edition of Parables from Nature has updated some of words from the text such as hath, whither, cock, gay, and additional words and replaced these often confusing words with modern equivalents, such as has, where, rooster, happy, etc. to facilitate ease of reading and understandability. Because word definitions change with time, changing outdated words in the text adds value to the book by keeping the meaning of the words intact, while changing the actual words.•All four parts of this series are included in this Kindle book. What can we learn about God and life from nature? In this classic book, Margaret Gatty uses lessons from nature to teach timeless principles about things such as faith, leadership, and eternity. Each chapter contains its own independent story. In one story, when a caterpillar is asked to take care of the eggs of a dying butterfly, the caterpillar feels unfit for the task because of the magnificence of the grand butterfly. A lark tells the caterpillar that she must have faith. When the eggs of the butterfly hatch, and the shocked caterpillar realizes that the butterfly’s eggs are caterpillars like she is, she learns the lesson of faith—that she must believe something will happen even though she hasn’t seen it yet. When the time of metamorphosis comes for the caterpillar, and none of her relatives believe that she will become a butterfly, she says with confidence and joy—“I shall be a Butterfly some day!” THE TABLE OF CONTENTS IS NOW FULLY FUNCTIONAL AND CLICKABLE.

Not illustrated. 1878 edition. Excerpt: ... the opposite corner, I see the sentinel guard, who will never stir from his post, until the assembly has dispersed, unless he hears or sees symptoms of danger or interruption, and then he will dash out and fly among them, making his warning cry, so different from all others, that any one who has once heard it will recognize it again. We must whisper our remarks very softly then, or it may give notice of our presence here, and all the flock may forsake the field. How solemn and grave, yet how keen and attentive he looks! How patient and observant! Contented not to join the fun himself, so that he may but promote it. Unselfish, dark watchman, are you paid for your trouble, and if so, how? Or do you do it out of love and affection for your brethren, expecting love and affection from them in return, on some future occasion, when one of them will watch, and you be allowed to play? Play, I still say; but can this be only play indeed? Surely something graver and more important than play must have brought these different companies and families from their often distant homes, to this spot? Alas! how vain are my questionings! nature remains mute around me, and man is ignorant and unable to answer. Yes! ignorant and unable to answer, let him say what he will. Hear this, oh you philosophers,--you lights of the world, with your books and papers and diagrams, and collected facts, and self-confidence unlimited! You who turn the bull's eye of your miserable lanthorns upon isolated corners of the universe, and fancy you are sitting in the supreme light of creative knowledge! Hear this; you are ignorant and unable to answer; or disprove it if you can, by showing me that you do know this one simple thing which puzzles me now! Tell me what the rooks are...

  • Parables From Nature Utilizing the Charlotte Mason Homeschooling Method

Mrs Alfred Gatty, Margaret Scott Gatty

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Nov. 9, 2016)
Mrs. Alfred Gatty's superb book of stories for homeschooling children is as practical and useful today as when it appeared in the mid-19th century. This book was published in response to a growing trend toward homeschooling as an method of education in the United States. The vast geographic expanse and speed of development in the nation at the time meant that municipal schools and formal education could not develop in time. Children either went with little education, or were taught at home or in small town classrooms - over decades, the homeschooling community formed, with Charlotte Mason's ideas among the most popularly used. Parables From Nature was conceived as a way for parents mindful of the importance of education and knowledge in children. It helps children visualize stories and narratives, develop their English language skills, and become moral and upstanding from a basis of traditional Christian principles, although the tales may be read and understood by those of any religion or none. The stories are reasonably easy to follow, and all have clear lessons and principles young children can learn. By stimulating the imaginations and allowing children to form ideas through these parables, parents have applied a tenet of Charlotte Mason's home schooling philosophy. Mason believed that children learn best when allowed to reason within their natural attention spans; thus, each of these tales is of a length perfect as a basis for a single lesson.
