The Awakening of Helena Richie tells the story of a new resident coming to Old Chester, and discovering the moral double standard to which women are held in rural America. ---Excerpt--- Goliath's selfishness carried them home and landed Dr. Lavendar at his own fireside, rather tired and full of good intentions in regard to calls. He confided these intentions to Dr. William King who looked in after supper to inquire about his cold. "Cold? I haven't any cold! You can't get a job here. Sit down and give me some advice. Hand me a match first; this ragamuffin Danny has gone to sleep with his head on my foot, and I can't budge." The doctor produced the match; "I'll advise you not to go out in such weather. Promise me you won't go out to-morrow." "To-morrow? Right after breakfast, sir! To make calls on the people I've neglected. Willy, how can I find a home for an orphan child? A parson up in the mountains has asked me to see if I can place a little seven-year-old boy. The child's sister who took care of him has just died. Do you know anybody who might take him?"

Helena Richie leaves a drunken husband, who had killed their child, and goes to Old Chester with her friend Lloyd Pryor. Most believe the newcomers Helena and Lloyd are brother and sister, and Helena adopts a homeless boy, David, who had been a ward of the town’s minister, Dr. Lavendar. Helena’s true husband dies, but Lloyd Pryor, now tired of Helena, refuses to marry her. Helena confesses to the minister about her actual relationship with Pryor, and Dr. Lavendar forces her to give up her son. Helena agrees, certain that she is an unfit mother. Helena pleads her case and fights for her maternal rights.

Margaret Deland (1857--1945) was an American novelist, short story writer, and poet. She also wrote an autobiography in two volumes. She is generally considered part of the literary realism movement. Deland is known principally for the novel John Ward, Preacher (1888), an indictment of Calvinism, which became a best-seller. Her 'Old Chester' books, based on her early memories of the Pittsburgh communities where she grew up — including Maple Grove and Manchester — were also popular. She was recognized as an important and popular author of literary realism in the United States, though some of her plots and themes were shocking to proper Bostonians. In her lifetime she was called the American Thomas Humphry Ward and was compared to Elizabeth Gaskell. Patches is a talking dog. He just loves the cold weather! Patches wakes up to look outside to see what the weather is like. He waits patiently for the weather to get cold enough for snow. Patches can hardly wait to play in the snow. Patches will show his master how he makes a snoaw angel. Patches looked like a little snowman with four legs! Santa delivers doggie treats to Patches. Patches gets tired from all the playing and excitement so he goes to his favorite spot and goes to sleep.
