  • Identification: Interpretations of Loss

    Margaret Aliffi

    eBook (, Jan. 28, 2019)
I was only 15 when I lost my father but I had felt as if he was gone long before he passed. Between his deployment overseas and his long struggle with brain cancer I felt as though the man who raised me had disappeared despite the fact that he was still in front of me. These two stories highlight the ways in which I grieved and dealt with his absence, his sickness, and his death. Written in 2014, during the height of my grief and adolescence, these are stories of intense pain and a glimmer of hope that I could carry on and be someone that not only my father would be proud of but that I would be proud of. Today, I am less certain that I am someone that my father would be proud of, but I am proud of me. To read the words I wrote when I felt tortured by living, while at the same time desperately wanting to love life, makes me see how far I’ve come. Today I love my life, myself, and my father despite not understanding any of them. These are two stories of loss, love, and growth.
