    Miguel de Cervantes, P.A. Motteux

    Hardcover (Everyman's Library, Oct. 15, 1991)
Our ceaseless human quest for something larger than ourselves has never been represented with more insight and love than in this story of Don Quixote–pursuing his vision of glory in a mercantile age–and his shrewd, skeptical manservant, Sancho Panza. As they set out to right the world’s wrongs in knightly combat, the narrative moves from philosophical speculation to broad comedy, taking in pastoral, farce, and fantasy on the way. The first and still the greatest of all European novels, Don Quixote has been as important for the modern world as the poems of Homer were for the ancients.Translated by P. A. Motteux

  • Don Quixote

    Miguel de Cervantes, John Ormsby

eBook (Classic Cervantes: Don Quixote, Jan. 4, 2014)
"Don Quixote", fully titled "The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha", is a Spanish novel by Miguel de Cervantes. It follows the adventures of a nameless hidalgo (at the end of Part II given the name Alonso Quixano) who reads so many chivalric novels that he loses his sanity and decides to set out to revive chivalry, undo wrongs, and bring justice to the world, under the name Don Quixote. He recruits a simple farmer, Sancho Panza, as his squire, who often employs a unique, earthy wit in dealing with Don Quixote's rhetorical orations on antiquated knighthood. Don Quixote, in the first part of the book, does not see the world for what it is, and prefers to imagine that he is living out a knightly story. The story implements various themes, such as intertextuality, realism, metatheatre, and literary representation.Published in two volumes, in 1605 and 1615, Don Quixote is considered the most influential work of literature from the Spanish Golden Age and the entire Spanish literary canon. As a founding work of modern Western literature, and one of the earliest canonical novels, it regularly appears high on lists of the greatest works of fiction ever published. It has had major influence on the literary community, as evidenced by direct references in Alexandre Dumas' "The Three Musketeers" and Mark Twain's "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn", as well as the word 'quixotic'.Miguel de Cervantes said that the first chapters are taken from "The Archive of La Mancha" and the rest translated from the Arabic from the Moorish author Cid Hamet Ben Engeli. This metafictional trick appears to be designed to give a greater credibility to the text, by implying that Don Quixote is a real character and that the story truly occurred several decades back. Yet it is obvious to the reader that such a thing is impossible, because the presence of Cide Hamete would have caused numerous temporal anomalies. It was a common method at the time because of the disapproval the novel genre was subject to at that time.

The definitive edition of DON QUIXOTE-illustrated with beautiful historical material and illustrations by Gustave Doré-formatted for kindle to improve your reading experience-linked table of contents to navigate easily-this well regarded translation by John Ormsby includes an introduction“Don Quixote is the world's best book say the world's top authors.” The Guardian"If there is one novel you should read before you die, it is Don Quixote" Ben Okri“Don Quixote is a funny book. I mean laugh out loud funny. Sometimes at work I would unplug my iPod and read out a scene . . . It is funny ironic, funny slapstick, funny base, funny absurd.” Drew Gummerson“So the best thing to say up front, perhaps, is get hold of Don Quixote and make time for it. It will be worth the television sitcoms you skip, the thirty or so quiet evenings you spend on it . . . But the book quite staggered me with its charm, beauty, and profundity. Once you enter (or re-enter) its expansive, ruminative, deeply nourishing world, the literary equivalent of eating "slow food," it's hard not to become a bit of a bore about how stupendous it is.” Terry Castle, The Atlantic“I practically did a dance when I read this. It was wonderful. So many different characters drifted through this book and I became attached to all of them. I felt like something had been taken away from me when I finished.” 1001 Books you must read before you die“Alonso Quixada, a retired gentleman of La Mancha, his mind addled through overconsumption of chivalric romances, dons a home-made helmet and rusty armour, saddles up his hack Rocinante, recruits a squire in the person of Sancho Panza (a local labourer lured by the promise of his own island to govern) and sets out as a knight-errant to perform feats of bravery in honour of his (supposed) lady, Dulcinea.” Adam Newey, The GuardianDON QUIXOTE is Cervantes’s original, epic, and hilarious masterpiece in a specially produced edition. This is one of the best and most accessible English translations of the classic text. Packed full of beautiful illustrations and formatted for Kindle.

    Miguel de Cervantes

    eBook (E-BOOKARAMA, Dec. 8, 2018)
“Don Quixote” is a novel by a Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes.Don Quixote is engrossed in a book about ancient chivalry. He falls asleep and dreams that he is a knight defending his ideal woman, Dulcinea. His vision is disrupted when Sancho Panza bursts through the study door. The gluttonous Sancho has stolen a ham and a group of exasperated housewives are pursuing him. Startled by the commotion, Don Quixote turns the angry women out of the room. An idea then comes to Don Quixote. He will make Sancho his squire and together the two will set out on an adventure to defend virtue and punish those who transgress the code of chivalry. "Don Quixote" is one of the most significant works by Spanish and the worldwide literature. It is important because it has the first characteristics of novels that we know today such as a long, complex story, characterized characters, a clear critic of society and art. Besides that Don Quixote is the second most translated and published work after the Bible. It set the foundation of the western European literature and it is considered to be one of the best fictional works ever. The main character, Don Quixote, just like his sidekick Sancho Panza became icons of culture and the symbols of idealistic fighters – dreamers that have more love for heroic acts than victory. The motive of the windmills, the so-called “tilting at windmills” is a well-known symbol of a made up, needless fight and it was first brought to life in this novel. Every time we use that expression we are actually referring to the novel.
