Billy is a fourteen-year-old boy who fears going to school and is too ashamed to play with the neighborhood kids. He has a mark on his face that Chuck, the school bully has used to target him for almost two years. He tried standing up to him once and got a punch in the face for his effort. He therefore stays at home reading his adventure stories living vicariously through the heroes in his books. One day he’s doing a chore for his mother and he stumbles upon an unusual object. At first, he only guesses what it is but after some web research, he learns it's a fossil. He enthusiastically digs up some more and his father takes him to the natural history museum to identify the finds. While at the museum, Billy learns more about fossils and can’t wait to get home and look for more. While attending school one day, a girl named Cathy who’s had her eye on Billy for a while walks home with him. He tells her about the fossils and she invites herself to his house to see them. Billy thinks she must feel sorry for him but he eventually accepts that she actually likes him. They work together on a school project and become friends. While doing more research, Billy finds out there’s a fossil hunter’s club in the area and his father takes him to a meeting. Billy makes a friend at the meeting named Casey who invites him on a hunt with him and his father. Billy finds over a dozen more fossils and plans to go on the next club outing with the members. Back at school Chuck sees the interaction between Billy and Cathy. Unbeknownst to Billy Chuck has had his eye on Cat himself. This leads to more animosity, which soon comes to a head. Billy builds his own field screen for separating fossils from gravel and dirt and goes with the fossil hunter's club to the Peace River in South Florida. He uses his new screen in the current and reveals his uncanny ability to find rare fossils. A photograph is taken of Billy and his find for the club's newsletter. On the bus the next morning, the abuse begins anew. Chuck is more intent on humiliating Billy than ever and trips him, causing him to injure his eye. He’s sent home but, after a good cry, he decides he’s not going to take it anymore. The next day at school when Chuck grabs Cat’s arm Billy stands up to him. He calls him carrot-top. Chuck can’t believe his ears. A fight starts and Billy is knocked down twice but each time he gets back up. Billy’s new found courage will be sorely needed. The time comes for the fossil hunt that everyone has been anticipating. Billy is part of a large convoy to a lime rock pit. They’re in awe at the sight of it. Billy quickly makes an exciting find when tragedy strikes. Billy must act quickly and bravely or someone may die.
