  • "A Bolshevik Agitator from Kamloops B,C. ? ": A Collection of stories from the Great Depression in British Columbia.

    R.M. Ross

    (, March 26, 2019)
These stories were taken from a recording in 1978 of my Grandparents for a Social Studies class in High School. This was their life during the toughest and most impossible years. They worked at everything, just to send some money home to feed and provide for younger siblings. There was no money to speak of and few good paying jobs. Most men worked in the camps of Northern B,C. and were on road crews.Either repairing them or clearing snow.My Grandfather would remark years later that the snow was a blessing for the work under Government contracts. It was steady and continuous. He worked at 50 to 60 different jobs during those years because you had to try it anyway since there were few choices around. My Grandmother worked in fish canneries but during the 1930's before she met my Grandfather, stayed home and helped the family with work.Canning fish was the past time in the small village in North Delta. Her Mom would cook the meals while the rest did chores and kept the garden going.Root cellars were an asset during this time and the canning of fruit, vegetables and fish was a remarkable feat .Never a shortage and if someone came knocking at the door to work for a meal, they would find themselves sitting down to hot soup, bread and a slightly used pair of shoes before any mention of a work detail would be discussed. That was the charity of my Grandmother's side, from a tight knit Norwegian/ Canadian family that knew about struggle and always helped their fellow man, woman or child whenever possible. My Grandmother's father was a fisherman and food wasn't a problem but making it last was hard work and stretching a budget for a family of 12 was difficult but soups ,stews and bread making were always a labour of love. They were successful in their lives, both of them because they knew how to look after everything that they had and as my Grandfather told his grandchildren ,me included. "Look after your pennies and the dollars will look after themselves." R.M.Ross
