  • Half Life

    Lillian Clark

Hardcover (Knopf Books for Young Readers, June 9, 2020)
An overachiever enrolls in an experimental clone study to prove that two (of her own) heads are better than one in this fast-paced, near-future adventure that's Black Mirror meets Becky Albertalli. There aren't enough hours in the day for Lucille--perfectionist, overachiever--to do everything she has to do, and there certainly aren't enough hours to hang out with friends, fall in love, get in trouble--all the teenage things she knows she should want to be doing instead of preparing for a flawless future. So when she sees an ad for Life2: Do more. Be more, she's intrigued. The company is looking for beta testers to enroll in an experimental clone program, and in the aftermath of a series of disappointments, Lucille is feeling reckless enough to jump in. At first, it's perfect: her clone, Lucy, is exactly what she needed to make her life manageable and have time for a social life. But it doesn't take long for Lucy to become more Lucy and less Lucille, and Lucille is forced to stop looking at Lucy as a reflection and start seeing her as a window--a glimpse at someone else living her own life, but better. Lucy does what she really wants to, not what she thinks she should want to, and Lucille is left wondering how much she was even a part of the perfect life she'd constructed for herself. Lucille wanted Lucy to help her relationships with everyone else, but how can she do that without first rectifying her relationship with herself?"Like a PG-13 mash-up of Booksmart and Black Mirror, Clark’s sophomore novel delivers both twisty sci-fi suspense and a highly relatable account of the search for self-determination and self-worth."--Booklist"Clark makes this territory fresh, and teens questioning their own self-worth will be drawn to this novel. A novel that is near-future enough to appeal to sci-fi fans as well as general audiences who like to ask, 'What if?'"--SLJ

  • Christopher Columbus and the Land Bridge: a backwards bedtime epic story

    Lloyd Clark, Lillian Clark

    language (, April 4, 2015)
This book was written as a series of bedtime stories to illustrate three of the greatest epics in human history. While it introduces children to the colorful stories of Christopher Columbus and the Silk Road, it connects to the even more amazing tale of the last Ice Age and how the first Americans migrated from Asia. It draws these historic events together to better illuminate what happened when the Old World mixed with the New after thousands of years of isolation, resulting in the shape of the today’s world. The goal of the book is to show children by example how they can use their natural curiosity about the world to gain deeper understanding through personal observation and scientific reasoning. The book touches on a lot of history about the world to give kids a framework to understand why things happened as they did, not just what happened. Let the kids decide their own pace and stopping points in the story, this is their journey. As a bedtime tale, the book paints with a broad brush to make the story relatable to kids. It makes use of the wisdom of crowds to portray key historical events with reasonable accuracy. However, it seems every time a new bone or fossil is dug up, new theories are postulated to add twists to the basic tale. So, best to search respected web sources for the most current details. Developed from a series of bedtime stories for a smart and curious kid. Told in a hands-on style designed to fire kid's imagination and understanding about the world. Book includes a YouTube link to earlier scientific triumphs of "the Amazing Eratosthenes" and how he carried out his nearly unbelievable estimate of the earth's size centuries before Columbus. The video provides an example of the story-telling style of the book, while also providing colorful background history. Kids love the stories, and the many historical events provide a plethora of points to interest the kids and engage parents in quality discussions with their young ones.
