  • Davenport Dunn: A Man of Our Day

    Charles James Lever

Paperback (Forgotten Books, Jan. 25, 2018)
Excerpt from Davenport Dunn: A Man of Our DayWE are at Como, on the lake - that spot so beloved of Opera dancers - the day-dream of prima donnas - the Elysium of retired barytones! And with what reason should this be the Paradise of all who have lived and sighed, and warbled and pirouetted, within the charmed circle of the footlights? The crystal waters mirroring every cliff and crag with intense distinctness the vegetation variegated to the very verge of extravagance; orange trees overloaded with fruit; arbutus only too much bespangled with red berries; villas, more coquettish than ever scene-painter conceived, with vistas of rooms within, all redolent of luxury; terraces, and statues, and vases, and fountains, and marble balconies, steeped in a thousand balmy odours, make up a picture which well may fascinate those whose ideal of beauty is formed of such gorgeous groupings. There is something of unreality in the brilliant colouring and variety of the scene suggesting the notion, that at any moment the tenor may emerge, velvet mantle and all, from the copse before you; or a prima donna, in all the dishevelment of her back hair, rush madly to your feet. There is not a portal from which an angry father may not issue; not a shady walk that might not be trod by an incensed basso!About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. • Tom Burke of Ours, Vol. 1 of 2

    Charles James Lever

Hardcover (Forgotten Books, Sept. 16, 2017)
Excerpt from Tom Burke of Ours, Vol. 1 of 2In the rumble, with the guard, rode one, whose burly figure and rosy cheeks seemed to feel no touch of the inclement Wind that made his companions crouch. An oiled-silk foraging-cap, fastened beneath the chin, and a large mantle of blue cloth bespoke him a soldier, if even the assured tone of his voice, and a certain easy carriage of his head, had not conveyed to the acute observer the same information.Unsubdued in spirit, undepressed in mind either by the long day of pouring rain, or the melancholy outline of country on every side, his dark eye flashed as brightly from beneath the brim of his cap, and his ruddy face beamed _as cheerily, as though nature had put forth her every charm of weather and scenery to greet and delight him.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. My sleep was sudden] broken in upon the morning after the p ay b a row - dow dow beat beneath my win ow. I jumped hastily from in bed and looked out, and there, to my error, perceived the regi ment under arms. It was one of our com founded Colonel's morning drills; and there he stood himself, with the poor adju tant who had been up all night, shiverin beside him. Some two or three of the o ficers had descended; and the drum was now summoning the others as it beat round the barrack-square. I saw there was not a moment to lose, and proceeded to dress with all dispatch; but, to my misery, I discovered eve here nothing but theat rical robes an decorations - there, lay a splendid turban, here, a pair of buskins a s angled jacket glittered on one table, an a jeweled scimitar on the other. At last I detected my regimental small clothes, most ignominiously thrust into a corner in my ardor for my Moorish robes the preceding evening.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
