“The Golden Goose” (German: Die goldene Gans) is a fairy tale collected by the Brothers Grimm, this version is illustrated with drawings by Leonard Leslie Brooke published originally by Frederick Warne & Co. In 1904.Three brothers are sent out in succession to the forest to cut down a straight, tall tree. The first two, provided with a bottle of wine and a piece of cake by a doting mother, are met by a little old gray man, who begs a piece of the cake and a sip of the wine. He is selfishly refused, both brothers asserting that they have hardly enough for themselves. They pass into the forest, attempt to cut down the tree, but succeed only in injuring their limbs, and are compelled to limp back to their home. The third brother, Simpleton, provided only with a bottle of sour beer and a hard crust of bread, also meets the old gray man and is also asked by him for a sip of his sour beer and a piece of his bread.Willingly he shares his food and is rewarded by having the old man accompany him into the forest where he directs Simpleton in his work. When the tree is chopped down he finds the Golden Goose in its trunk, and proceeds upon a course of wonderful adventures beneficial to himself.
