After his father's death he was thrown upon his own resources, but managed to study at both Petrograd and Moscow Universi ties, graduating in Law in 1897. During this period he endured great hardship - often even actual hunger - and was the victim of deep mel ancholia. His first writings were unsuccessful; and, for a time, he devoted himself to painting. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.
