At age thirteen, Kane Winter already knows that he's in trouble. He's already "had it" with the world of substance abuse in which he's gotten himself involved. But, now, on the verge of addiction, he is realizing that wanting out is easier than getting out. In a desperate attempt to leave "people, places, and things" behind, he steals from his parents and flies across the country, hoping to make contact with his mother's sister. But, not really knowing her, and terrified that she won't have anything to do with him, he allows his fears and his insecurities to work against him in getting the very thing that he wants... and desperately needs. Tara Wilson is a teacher and the widowed mother of four. Tara has given up trying to understand the reasons for substance abuse among the young men in her family. Her conclusion is that prevention is the best cure, and that's how she is trying to raise her four kids. But it seems that her "Commander in Chief", her Higher Power, has a different plan in mind for her. When her young nephew, Kane, dumps himself on her doorstep, scared, sick, and majorly under the influence, Tara is faced, once again, with trying to help him figure this out. First, her young brother-in-law, then her own kid brother, and now her 13-year-old nephew... all fighting a battle, with which she, no matter how hard she tries, just can't seem to help them... Would this time be different? Would she be able to help Kane break the ever-tightening grip that his addictive behavior is having on his life? Or is this, perhaps, just not her calling... something with which she has no business getting involved? After, all, beyond a valiant attempt at re-parenting him, what can she possibly do, except, maybe, pray for a miracle? But, then, if she gives up, who will help Kane? .
