  • Managing root-knot nematodes with the African marigold: Nematicidal potential of botanicals

    Osei Kingsley

Paperback (LAP LAMBERT Academic Publishing, Sept. 12, 2011)
Root-knot nematodes constitute a major constraint to agricultural production worldwide. They are particularly devastating in the vegetable industry in the tropical world. Management strategies such as cultural, biological, physical and host resistance have peculiar limitations. Chemical control however is most effective, but the effect of synthetic pesticides on the environment raises serious ecological concerns. Active ingredients identified in the African marigold have nematicidal properties and highly lethal to root-knot nematodes. In this study, the effective stage of the African marigold in managing root-knot nematodes was investigated in plant house, laboratory and micro plots experiments. In all cases, the effective stage of the antagonistic plant corresponded to 8-11weeks of growth during which period population reduction was maximum, hatching inhibition was greatest and root gall index was lowest. This information is useful for integrated pest management (IPM) formulation and implementation. Agricultural researchers, extension agents, students and farmers would find this book most useful.

  • THE AGONY, PAINS AND DENIALS OF A BARBARIC CUSTOM: Destroying The Very Essence Of Our Coexistence

    Kingsley Osuji

    eBook (, May 29, 2018)
Centuries ago in the eastern heartland region of Nigeria, there was this practice of using human beings as sacrifices to appease the gods of the land whenever abominable incidences occur. Thereafter, these humans used as sacrifices (Osu) were ostracized and declared unclean, unfit and unqualified to associate with those who used them for such sacrifices (Diala). The ugly side of it all is that the Osu person is not an accepted person in the society whether in leadership, marriage or even as a representative of the community no matter how well educated he or she may be. They were indeed stigmatized, marginalized, dehumanized and ostracized among their own people and place of their birth.
