Both girls soon realize that the recent move to grandpa’s farm presents more than the usual demands of attending a new school and making new friends. While Briley is supportive of her sister, she finds herself resenting the fact that it's Brenda who has inherited great-grandma Ellen's gift. This resentment, and the secrets Brenda expects her to keep, put a strain on their sisterly bond. Still, at the heart of the story is a strong sense of family, both past and present.
