The Using the Standards: Building Grammar and Writing Skills Series was developed to help students achieve the goals outlined in the IRA/NCTE Standards for the English Language. These standards encompass all types of language skills--reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing, and visually representing. Since this book focuses on grammar and writing, it emphasizes the standards most directly applicable. However, since reading and writing are inextricably linked, aspects of all 12 standards are included. The table of contents includes a listing of the related IRS/NCTE Standards that are addressed in that activity. The activities in the first half of this book focus on improving grammar skills; the second part includes activities to develop better writing skills.

This book provides both teachers and students a wide variety of hands-on, inquiry-based experiments that enhance and reinforce scientific thinking and vocabulary. The experiments supplement any science curriculum and provide students with a deeper understanding of scientific concepts. Experiments are designed to hone specific process and observation skills using readily available materials. Units of study and experimentation include objectives, material lists, focus questions, teacher and student instructions, reproducible record sheets, and follow-up questions and activities. Unit experiment examples include measurement using gummy worms, acids and bases using cabbage juice as an indicator, and density using cereal, just to name a few!
