Katharine Coman ( 1857 – 1915) was an American social activist and economist. She specialized in teaching about the development of the American West. Wellesley College named a professorship in her honor.Coman writes:"Another current of American influence was furnished by the hunting parties that made their way over the Sierras to the beaver streams along their western slopes. Tradition has it that, in 1822, Arguello sent an expedition up the Sacramento to the foothills of the Sierras to ascertain the truth of a report brought in by the Indians that a number of white men clad in leather and carrying long guns were in hiding there."Originally published in 1912; reformatted for the Kindle; may contain occasional imperfections; original spellings have been kept in place.
