When Daddy Po becomes trapped in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, Addy May grabs her backpack and heads out to find him. As she gets to the bridge into the city, she realizes she can not possibly make it through the flooding and devastation. She spends a lonely night on the bridge and in the morning decides to make her way North to Detroit to try and find her mother, who left when she was four-years-old. Along the way she meets up with both children and adults ready to help her, all teaching her something about the world outside her small town, and even more about herself. This is especially true when Addy May, who is biracial, stops in Birmingham, Alabama. There she finds a history she never knew she owned, and a debt she never knew she owed. Independent, endearing and precocious, Addy May is a girl both adults and young adults will come to love.
