  • A Day at the Market

    Sara Anderson

Board book (Handprint, March 1, 2006)
From the early morning fruit vendors hawking their wares to a quiet morning spent savoring a cup of hot chocolate, from the glistening, silvery salmon announced by a fishmonger's bellow to the silent halls as they're hosed down one last time by the night workers, the full experience of a farmer's market is reflected in Sara Anderson's signature cut-paper style and pitch-perfect voice. Set in the halls of Seattle's fabled Pike Place Market, a place Sara Anderson has shopped and loved for almost a quarter of a century, the book vividly recreates the cacophony, variety, joy, and life that can be found in every market across the land.

  • Michael Zachary: The Wilderness Battle

    Kurt Anderson

eBook (Three Arrows Press, LLC, April 15, 2011)
In the still evening air he heard the very soft but very distinct sound … of a war horn.Excitement grips fifteen-year-old Michael Zachary as he rides out for the first time to help patrol the perilous eastern border of King Krydon’s kingdom. Having grown up on a remote farm in the dangerous wilderness, Michael is very good with a sword, but even better with a bow. His father has trained him well. Skilled and courageous, he is as much a warrior as a farmer; he has to be.As the youngest member of the patrol, Michael fights both men and wolves. But will he have the courage to stand up for what he believes in the face of opposition? Michael must wrestle with himself and try to overcome the doubts of the older and more experienced fighting men on the patrol—so they can all survive the challenges that lie ahead.Review:I found Michael Zachary by Kurt Anderson to be a drawing and delightful read. Careful attention was given to setting the stage and developing the characters. There was a thoughtful balance between description and action that kept my attention in both fields. I especially enjoyed the explanation of how Michael Zachary got his name. The details were meaningfully unfolded, not rushed nor plunked down under my nose. Overall I was impressed with the easily digested insights about how boys grow into men under their father’s attentive tutelage. The lessons on the importance of good leaders doing what’s right rather than what’s popular were also well honed. Though not a didactic treatise, Michael Zachary divulges much that is valuable. I especially enjoyed the increasing pace of the tale once the setting and characters were well-established. By the end I realized I was already anxious for the next installment of adventure. I look forward to putting Michael Zachary into the hands of my two grandsons. Sandra LovelaceEducation Consultant
