  • November in Salem: The Bargain of Witches

    L C Russell

(Tiny Cottage Press, May 26, 2011)
What if you could save those hanged for witchcraft in 1692—but you had to bargain your own soul to do it? November Atwood has spent the first thirteen years of her life in privilege. But, this year is different. Her parents decide it’s time for her to spend the school year with her two aunts and twin cousins in Danvers, Massachusetts—an “ordinary” family. What starts off as a dull introduction to family life in the burbs soon becomes anything but ordinary when the cousins find an ancient box buried neath the roots of a withered tree in the shadows of the abandoned Danvers Asylum for the Insane. Clues on a weathered vellum document lead the trio into the tunnels beneath the moldering asylum where they encounter Hob, the keeper of The Rings, a portal that will transport them back in time to 1701 Salem Village where November learns she is the “Predicted One,” the one foretold to bring to an end the diabolical bargain signed in blood more than 300 years in the past. And where she will meet Thomas Parris, the sixteen year old son of Samuel Parris—crafter of The Bargain. November and Thomas are destined to forge a link that spans time, but first she must overcome both fear and physical challenge to confront the demon Astaroth, the embodiment of corruption itself and wager her very soul to bring an end The Bargain of Witches.
  • Have You Seen My 18 Wheeler?: A Picture Book of America's Over-The-Road 18 Wheelers

    Russell King

Paperback (Independently published, Sept. 27, 2019)
Book 1 in a series of 13 interactive picture books/travel games showing 19 trucking firms in each book. Contains Averitt Express, C.R. England, Celadon Trucking, Central Refrigerated, CFI (Contract Freighters, Inc.), Covenant Transport, Crete Carriers, Dart Advantage, KLLM Transport, Knight Transportation, Landstar System, PAM Transport, Prime, Schneider International, Swift Transportation, Transport Corporation of America, U.S. Express, USA Truck, and Werner Enterprises. Children and bored adult passengers use the books to search for, spot, and get points when they see an 18 wheeler. They are easily spotted on interstate highways or when passing through truck stops for gas or lunch. The books are in sequential order, from the largest firms (Book 1 has 19 firms with 96,870) to the smallest (Book 12 has 19 firms with only 172). The 18 wheelers in Book 1 will be easy to find but those in Book 12 will be almost impossible. They include a close-up photograph of the truck, trailer, and company name, along with space to record personnel information about the trip when the 18 wheeler was spotted. This is kind of like the “License Plate” game or the “Alphabet” game we all played as children, except that an 18 wheeler is much easier to spot than that missing license from Rhode Island.

Finally, a book your baby can read. Easy shapes, colors and no unnecessary distractions help babies learn to identify the shapes of the words, alongside the colors in this modern equivalent to the old-fashioned board books. Inspired by the work of the Institute for the Achievement of Human Potential and Dr Glen Doman, these are digital versions of the same homemade books I made for my kids over 20 years ago. The font size is large and designed to be zipped through quickly. With increased exposure, your baby learns to recognize the words and associate them with their meaning. Having one word per line helps babies understand the words in context.
