  • Civil War Era Recipes

    Julia Hutchins

eBook (American History Fun Facts, Feb. 6, 2012)
Civil War Era Recipes, compiled by Julia Hutchins for American History Fun Facts. This fun book features original recipes from the Civil War era. Compiled from antique cookbooks, this book will keep you entertained with the original grammar, spelling and ingredients from the time period. You'll read such "luscious" sounding recipes as Black Puddings, Hardtack, Sucking Pig and more. There are some recipes in this book that the modern cook can and will want to try. But many ave been included simply for their "fun factor". Our ancestors typically wasted nothing - when cooking an animal, they used all of the "parts" - something that may make today's cook squirm a bit. They were definitely a resourceful bunch of people! Note from author: If you are looking for a recipe book that you can immediately use in today's world, this book may not be what you are looking for. These are ORIGINAL recipes from the era - the ingredients and measurements have NOT been revised for today's cook. My goal was to provide the recipes as they were written and used during the Civil War era.Enjoy reading and trying these old recipes! NOTE: The table of contents problem mentioned in the review has been fixed. You can now jump to whatever recipe you want, with all of them listed and linked in the table of contents.

    Hardcover (Purnell, May 1, 1977)
Please be advised, this is NOT a board book. It's HC and has 80 pages. But it is a word book, in the classic sense. It reminds me a lot of Richard Scarry's Busy Books, but less on the page, so it's a bit easier to follow.
